Re: OT- How the Californians do airshows..
Flying under the Golden Gate Bridge at 20' off the water. Impressive.. Goodness knows how they were cleared to do it. Just for the record, at the very bottom of the page it says "...the Number 5 did NOT go under the bridge for the sneak pass. He popped over it on the SF side of the span, and droppe...

OT A grand day out...
Hi folks, Apologies for being somewhat off-topic, but I'd like to pick the collective brain...I'm planning a three day jaunt with my father, the highlight of which will be a taxi ride in "Just Jane" at East Kirkby. Coming from Bristol, that leaves a day to kill on the way up and one on the way back....

You do have to be a bit of a sleuth to find the download links on some of the file host sites I've spent a while pulling down a few, and there are some good reads on there. Having said that both "Cockpits" and "Turrets" are still available to buy (I know, I paid for 'em) so I'm not entirely sure wha...

As to the possible effectiveness of German bombs against the British battleships, we'll never know, however, as I mentioned the Japanese sank Peince of Wales and Replulse while they were at sea and at action stations. To the best of my knowledge, their bombs were no better than what was available t...

I think you'll find the Luftwaffe's bombs were every bit as capable as the Japanese variety. If the Luftwaffe had stuck to it's primary goal of knocking out Fighter Command and secured air superiority over southern England, the channel and the coastal areas, the RN would never have made it to the E...

"Nice" doesn't quite do it justice - lovely shots of the Whirlwind, and Manchester, and what about the half size mockup of the Stirling?? Incidentally, if you click each pic, it takes you to the next in the list, no need to fanny around with the mouse to hit the "next pic" Icon. Also incidentally, i...

Bristol ?? Isn't that this place near Chipping Sodbury ? :P  I have been there on pupils exchange, being from Hannover, oops, Hanover ;). Yep, fine fish and chip shop at Chipping Sodbury. Do you know that I'd never realised that Bristol and Hannover were twinned? The things you learn on this f...

My ATC gliding time was spent in Sedburgs and Kirby Cadets at RAF Locking. Apart from a memorable stall when we abandoned the winch a bit prematurely, and the time when the pilot tapped the instrument panel and one of the dials fell out, my over-riding memories are... a) "I'm 14 - do you REALLY want...

Re: Sad news
I have just been informed that Pierre Closterman has died in his 85th year. Rest in peace, Pierre, and fly a long peaceful way to heaven. Sad indeed, "The Big Show" is my favourite WW2 memoir, very evocative. You really felt for him as he takes his beloved Tempest "Le Grand Charles" up its last fli...
