I've bought a 1944 R.A.F. (War) aeronautical map of SW England covering the area South-North - Cherbourg & The Channel to a line from Fishguard across to Bletchley and West-East - Lands End to Brighton, showing all the airfields of that era and landmarks like the Cern Abbas Giant and several 'white horses'.

Is this of any use to those of you who are mapping the landscape in BoB?

It's a bit scruffy but I guess I can provide scans for anyone else who might want to use it to navigate the area.

It would be lovely if you could share it :) I know the coastal airfields quite well by now but I can still get lost getting back to the inland ones.

I'm not mapping, but I'm always eager to see wartime maps of the area, especially since I'm not a native.

Is it a reprint of an old map, and are there any others for sale?

I am not sure if Hurricane Hicken or PV have the 1938 maps that JamesB reproduced from Ordnance Survey.
He gave me 4 huge map sections that cover all of the "BoB World" in England.

Here is one section looking at it with paintShopPro. The JPEG resolution he sent me is 9725 x 6576 :!: and very detailed.

Some actual size, small cuts, when looking at them with IrfanView:

James gave gave me these with the caveat that I not share them without his permission.
A promise that I have kept. He was going to assemble a "Navigation Map" for players, using these maps, but I have not heard from him much in the past months.
In the meantime, I am sitting on them, unshared. Seems a waste of resources to me.

Hehe, I'm still here Stickman, and working in the background. Scott has these maps and we have been discussing the best way to deal with them, I'll kick off that conversation again. The ones I have scanned are 1938-9 BoB period maps and I have the whole of the Battle of Britain area. In fact, I have the whole of England, Scotland and Wales.

James if these are eventually released in some way it would be great to have the Scottish ones included too. Even though BOBII doesnt include the scottish bases, Having been born on one I would love to see them.

Stewart, sorry I should have been a bit more specific. I have the Air Ministry maps for the whole of the UK except ireland but I only have the ones which feature in the BoB game area map scanned. Unfortunately they cost a LOT of money to get done at this resolution as you need specialist equipment to scan them bearing in mind the size they are and that you cannot do them in sections as you can't fold them any way but the way they are meant to be folded or you risk damaging them. If I can find a way to get the others done I will. In the mean time I could scan a section or two for you if you like.........

James, I was born on RAF Grangemouth in 1950 just after the RAF returned it to civilian use. During that time there was still a chronic housing shortage and the barracks and officers quarters were used as temporary housing for many families. I have the distinction of actually being born on the base as I was too quick and arrived before the ambulance! If you could scan this area for me I would be most gratefull to you. Its really strange but ever since I can remember I have had an affinity with all things BOB!

Hi Guys
As my experiment continues apace (currently flying circuits and getting to grips with the P8 compass) the next step is to get used to flying around out of sight of the airport from which I took off.
I see that there was this post/discussion a while back - I have tried to download the files but can't do so for some reason. Is there anyway of getting copies of the "four sections" mentioned for the complete BOBII area. That would be a real big help. I have tried to search out some old OS maps on the net (1938 editions seem to be the correct choice) but there doesn't seem to be any like the ones mentioned. I read that pilots had 4 miles to the inch and 8 miles to the inch maps to navigate with in flight. Are these the ones mentioned in this post.
If the above are no longer available which OS maps would be the best to get?
Any help would be greatly received.
Regards
CA

Oh Crumbs
I searched high and low on the internet for these and they were right under my nose.
I think I should stop making posts!
