Interesting discussion. Note that vast majority of airplane's parts and components are repaired/replaced on condition. So in reality it works the same way: when the mechanic notices that something is not as it is supposed to be, he may label it "yellow" (well...not quite but to give an idea) or fix it right away, depending. There is not that much of preemptive replacements going on.
As they are "on condition", finding these items "yellow" is the reason why a piston GA is supposed to have a minor inspection each 50 hours typically, while getting the oil changed as well.
