I need help starting the engine

Post by AAE »

Hello

This is my first post here as I am starting with the C172 and I have a question:

I can not start the engine even if I prime it, but if I hit Shift 3 (controls) and I select DAMAGE OFF I am able to start the engine. What I am doing wrong? or what step I am missing to not be able to start the engine? Do I have to prime it more?

Thanks in advance

Are you following the checklist? Would strongly suggest reading the relevant section of the manual if you haven't done so.

There are many steps to starting the engine and they have to be done in the correct order and for the correct amount or correct amount of time.

Check the condition of the aircraft in the maintenance hangar.
Make sure there is fuel and oil.

Starting checklist (off memory)
Ensure that the fuel selector is in both
Fuel cutoff pushed in
Mixture idle cutoff
Throttle open about 25%
Master switch on

---
If the engine was recently run and is still hot then try to start without priming first.
Fuel Pump on
Mixture fully forward for 5 seconds (one one thousand, two one thousand...)
Mixture idle cutoff
Fuel pump off
---

Ignition switch to Start
When the engine fires, mixture promptly set to full rich
Throttle set to 1000 RPM or lower
Watch for oil pressure rising to normal within 30 seconds or shut down the engine and check for issues
Lean for taxi

There you have it and the above steps must be done in the above sequence or you will have trouble starting.

Love it!

Even if I argue there is still some work to do on it, this is likely the only GA engine simulation out there, turboprops included, that actually require you to actually start it up. Manually. It is not only about reading a list, but all about utilizing it when the contents of it are understood. A manual start at its worst is easily as dynamic as flying an instrument approach; the to-do list only provides you the main points.

Now you can start the 172, try going for an hour flight in high temps and then starting it again on a 40C tarmac, after 1/2 hour, with 20 people watching from the club house balcony. It is an "interesting" experience. (Please don't ask me how I know )
