Taxiing help

Post by Styggron »

Hello everyone,

Having a great deal of trouble taxxing the Anson.

1. I increase throttle get get some speed up but I can't seem to turn fast enough.
-I end up going too far, so I CONTROL-P for pushback and then try again. This repeats over and over it's a little tiresome.

2. The differential brakes help a little but still can't turn fast enough. If I put up the throttle I get off the taxi way so again, CTRL-P for pushback.

My process
1. Start up, increase throttle
2. Twist joystick which does differential brakes
3. Keep tapping brakes because else it just goes way too far and does not turn fast enough
4. Keep adjusting throttle
5. end up incorrect. lower throttle. CTRL-P for pushback
6. start over

I even tried assigning left and right differential brakes to joystick keys to see if it helps. Nope. You can't seem to force one wheel to be full brake while the other is not braked to do a quicker turn.

I know this is an older plane and needs more space. I fly this one at Duxford where real ones were stationed. Seems taxiing is really hard on this.

What am I doing wrong ? :(

You don't mention the differential throttle control, are you just trying to taxi sharply using both engines at the same power?

thanks,

Hello Lewis,
Oh goodness. Of course !!!!! If I want to turn right, I should just increase the left engine only and keep the right one low.

My joystick only has 1 level I use for throttle. Unlike the B377 I can't assign that single lever to one engine so I might have to do it within cockpit manually.

Oh my goodness what a doofus I am.

Yes Lewis I was using both engines at the same power and using differential brakes which sort of works but that's doing it "the stupid way". Oh goodness.

<bangs head against wall> stupid stupid stupid me.

I was doing it the same way as I would the B377 but the B377 of course has a front wheel that turns so of course it works on that and also you can tick the boxes as to which engines you want to affect with your single joystick throttle control.

You can put this question of mine up on the A2A Staff room so people can laugh.
My goodness I can't believe I didn't just put one engine up and leave the other down....

ARGGHHH

Thank you Lewis. I'll see if that works.

Does anyone have any taxiing tricks with this plane ?
FSX key mapping says you go E1 to select engine 1 and E2 to select engine 2

I was hoping I can go E1 and then use the joystick slider to only move E1 up and down but nope.
Pressing E and then 1 quickly does nothing and the joystick throttle control always seem to affect both engines hence taxiing is rather difficult.

I'd like to assign buttons for the left engine and right but FSX does not seem to allow separate throttle assignment stupidly.

Thoughts anyone ?
and no, I don't want to get a yoke / throttle quadrant 8)

Throttle assignments in FS are done via axis so I think your stuck with buttons unless you maybe go the FSUIPC route with some funky programming maybe possible?

One trick I find very handy with tail-draggers, because I don't have multiple throttles, is editing the aircraft.cfg to give me tail-wheel steering with the rudder. If you are happy to do that then this is what you do.

Open the aircraft.cfg file and look in the [contact_points] section. Find this line...

point.0= 1, -25.200, 0.000, -2.100, 1201, 0, 0.410, 180.000, 0.200, 2.492, 0.695, 0.000, 0.000, 1

Change the 180 to 40 and save the file. It should look like this...

point.0= 1, -25.200, 0.000, -2.100, 1201, 0, 0.410, 40.000, 0.200, 2.492, 0.695, 0.000, 0.000, 1

You should now have tail-wheel steering.

Cheers.
Steve.

Wow fantastic thank you. So this only affects this plane yes ?
Yes I just can't seem to bind one button for one engine and one for the other and the keyboard controls never do anything so it would be clumsy steering via the virtual cockpit.... I am surprised FSX does not allow binding a key to separate engines....

Correct. It only affects the aircraft of which the cfg file belongs to. You would for example, have to do the same edit to the B-17 cfg file to get the same result..

Probably won't need to do it on the B17. The B377 taxi's perfectly, only the Avro Anson doesn't. I *really* need to find separate controls to the throttle but can't find a way.

Hello Bladerunner 900
A similar question except this time for the Heinkell which does not have a tail wheel.
Do you know which of these fields
point.0 = 1, 16.46, 0, -8.792, 3000, 0, 1.22, 40, 0.15, 3, 0.8, 12, 10, 0, 162, 200

I would need to change so the nose wheel turns more of an angle to make this plane easier to taxi ?

Thank you in advance.

Hello.

Sorry, I don't know that one. It has never given me too much trouble taxiing, so I have never bothered identifying which point controls steering. It's a bit slow to respond but I find it manageable, as long as I keep the speed down.

Perhaps some kind person with more intimate knowledge of the Heinkel's workings will enlighten us on this point.

Not a problem, I had posted in the Heinkell forum which is really where it belonged and changing the same parameter improved things. I changed it from 30 to 40 and it is better :) Now the only issue is how to pushback because when you do, you tip over....everytime.... :O

That is weird. Mine pushes back fine, in FSX Steam. Hmm... think I'll go try it in P3D.

I try control-p , you push back and when you stop it tips right over. ROFL

I have unlimited fuel too, I never fly without it. It's a sim and that is how I choose to fly. :)
