Hi all...I am wondering how to use the radio in the accu sim p51d mustang. when i tune to a radio nav frequency,I dont see any needles pointing to anything in the instruments. Anyone know how to operate the radios and navigation?

Jerry the Mustang does not have any navigational gauges like what you are seeking. In the old days the P-51 pilots would rely on the bombers to lead the way as they had their own on board navigators. The Mustang has an compass where you can set your course in the upper left corner of the instrument panel. This is just to help you maintain and fly that course though as the plane will not fly it by itself.

As far as the radio itself goes if you bring up the radio freq page (Shift+6 ), and you will be able to set 4 pre-set radio channels. 1 to correspond to each of the red buttons on the box to the right of your seat. The last one (Beam) I think is meant to set an ADF frequency, but as I said above the Mustang does not have navigational instruments so I am not sure what good setting that would do. Your best bet is to set a flight plan, and use the map (Shift+5) to do your navigating. Or just navigate based on landmarks/celestial methods like they used to do back in those days. Hope this helps.

Embrace the old-school dear fellow, time to blow the dust off that whizz-wheel, and then indulge in some good old chart origami.

I found that when you set the VOR or ADF freq in the radio pop-up, and you are within range, an arrow (red for VOR and green for ADF) will appear on the map pop up. The heading indicator moves on the map with the control on the gauge, so you can set the needed heading to match up on the map, close the map window and fly the heading from the guage.

Pretty cool.

Thanks for the tip Dave. Well now we know what all the radio functions are for at least. Old school this bird is though. Really not to hard as long as you learn how to do proper timed turns, and you time your flight. A2A did us a favor in including our ground speed on the Shift+2 panel. So takes a lot of the guess work out. So just have to account for drift, and all that good stuff. Should at least be able to put yourself in the ball park of where you intend to be. If nothing else at least take a lot of extra gas while practicing it.

All the old arts going out the CV panel I see.

I write this a little in jest chaps, intended to be friendly. Just amuses me to read this thread, because I'm actually sat here reacquainting myself with a CRP-5. I heard an instructor say; "we make the students use these as a form of torture, whilst real pilots use iPhone app's, or battery powered 'CRPs'"

I was curious about the BC-1206 operation myself so I did a search and was quickly immersed in the fascinating and sometimes creepy world of vintage radio gurus. I found some for sale and I found info on how to uninstall one on the mustang but not much on its use. It was non-directional and could be used to listen to airport communications and beacons but I am unclear about its use as a nav aid
I simulated a mission of the 506th FG from Iwo Jima to Chichi Jima. I did find it useful to confirm I was in the general area of Iwo Jima on my return. Regardless the 506th guys had to be very proficient at long range dead reckoning.
