When I am descending in the B-17 I cannot keep my Carb temps up. What am I doing wrong?

Well, are you turning your manifold pressure selector back up to "8.0" (turning your turbos back up) while decreasing throttle? During descent you should be managing your Manifold pressure with your throttle while keeping your Turbos up. This is how you deal with Carburetor temps on the B-17 because there is no 'Carburetor Heat' capability on this aircraft.

Manifold pressure selector dial to 8 and MP to 26" descend @ 1000ft per min

Huh, Ok I'll give that a try. I usually have Turbo's at 8 and MP in the green when descending and I always get low carb temps as soon as I lower the manifold pressure a little bit. Luckily they have never iced up and quit, but I was waiting for it. Thanks.

Just how FAST are you descending? If you come down too fast it won't make any difference what
your turbos are set for, you'll still run into carb temp issues.

On missions with the 91st BG, we generally start our descents at 500 FPM, holding our MP at
cruise settings until the speed builds to 200 MPH. Then we start deceasing throttle settings while
keeping the turbo dial at 8. As we near our base we may increase rate of descent to 800 or 1000FPM
to be at the correct altitude for our approach and then slow to 150 MPH.

Ok thanks. I never descend faster than 1,000 fpm. And I always keep the turbo's at 8 while descending.

Shouldn't your speed already be at about 200 indicated while at cruise? Or at least pretty close?

Cruising at 200mph is a bit fast (and not as fuel efficient). Ideally you should be shooting for about 150mph at cruise altitude.
