Thanks for the post neighbor. I've always been interested in that transitional period in aviation history - when piston fighters clung onto their last vestiges of worthiness in a changing world. I believe the true test of WW2 aircraft design is how they answered the call over 5 years after they went into production. It doesn't have to be 5 years, but that's a good chunk of time to use as a standard.
I could write a book based upon what I just said, going into each aircraft design, but we all know the score in this forum. The Mustang, in this regard, has quite an impressive history. The Corsair is another one, and their are others. Both of these aircraft were in production somewhat early in WW2 - at least the United States involvement - and they were still quite effective in the Korean War.
