Cost of an R-4360

Post by joe bob »

I am having a good time running an AirHauler campaign using the 377 and to add to the challenge I am going to "pay" a certain amount of money when I have to replace an engine through normal Accusim wear and tear. I think this adds a great deal to the fun.

I was wondering if your amigos at the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation could give an idea on how much an off the shelf refurbished R4360 engine would cost or the cost of having one that needs overhauling done. I have searched and have found some quotes for display only engines but no instances of an airworthy one for sale.

That's because there are no airworthy R4360's available for sale. The few that exist are well spoken for. :)

However, typically you don't buy a new engine when the old one fails, you overhaul it. Much less cost anyway. Typically an R4360 overhaul back in the day would probably run about $8,000-$10,000. Today, you're talking somewhere north of $200,000 (a good R3350 overhaul including PRT's runs about $125,000-$150,000). If you had to buy a new engine, fully overhauled, you're talking a cool half mill ($500,000) minimum.

Thanks CF just what I was looking for. If no information was forthcoming I was going to guess 100,000 so I will just bump that up to 150,000.
I lost one at Vr yesterday and that wasn't the one in the worst condition.
I am off to see how my bank credit is!

Hey joe bob

Try contacting this company; they may be able to answer your question.

Anderson Aeromotive is the world's largest overhauler of cylinders for Pratt & Whitney and Curtiss-Wright engines.
Our facility covers 55,000 square feet for storage of engines, consumable parts and engine sub parts on 8 acres of land.
Anderson Aeromotive currently employs 30 mechanics and overhauls or repairs approximately 50 engines per year.

I am currently rebuilding a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp for the Marietta Museum of History (Aviation Wing). I am using a company out in California to get the missing parts I need. Parts are not cheap so take care of your engines! Have fun and I hope you get your questions answered.

Anderson always has a booth at Reno displaying complete 3350's and 4360's plus numerous parts.
I believe they have found NOS 3350's & 4360's in southeast Asia.
Leftovers from the Vietnam conflict.

Thanks Cliff, I had come across that site while searching for the price but I did not want to bother a business over my little game.
I may do it anyway though if for no other reason than to get the story of that old guy in green standing next to the lady in the photo on their web site. Seems quite the character.

That is great news Thunderstreak.
I worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry which included some designs from the 1940s that were still being made in small quantities. The engines, like so many other things from that time, are a work of art to a machinist.
