8) Anyone flying the hurricane Irene yet? I just flew my 10th flight with A2A strat from Miami KMIA to MYNN Nassua this morning at 5:35 Eastern time with 47mph headwinds with 3700 gallons of fuel and landed with 702 gallons to spare. They had the airport under IFR closed but I had career on so I flew in anyway. Set her down with a slight crosswind from the East; no auto-pilot; the threshold came into view at 100ft. and it was my best landing. I had about 15 degrees flaps. I followed the ILS up and down all the way. But get this: No complaints, no baby crying and my log book said "Just like flying in a house", and my comments were "No one can remember my name". Go figure.

I assume you had a rather steady wind and not much in the way of turbulence?

Can hurricanes actually look like hurricanes in FSX. At least shape-wise?

No. FSX sucks when it comes to weather. MS spent too much time focusing on the ground and shiny fuselage to worry about the things that really matter.

Best regards,
Robin.

Active Sky has a checkbox for Hurricane depiction. I've never flown into one, but I sort of understand that it does this through its ability to take the live data and force it into the sim via the creation of virtual, non-existant weather stations.

Hurricane depiction or not, the question that the Original Poster hasn't answered yet is wether or not he actually encountered turbulent, vomit-inducing conditions, but yet still got the comment "just like a flying house", and whether those comments were appropriately realistic. It rather looks like he just encountered some low visibility, but otherwise smooth sailing.

EDIT: This will be a good exercise for me to test out. Tonight I will play Hurricane Hunter in the Stratocruiser with some passengers on board, in career mode, and see what their evaluations end up being. It will be fun.

Sorry; been busy flying around with the P-3 "Hurricane Hunter". Actually FSX does suck with turbulence but I was hit a few times when real weather changed directions, but it was a killer coming in when I tried to stay locked on the ILS and flew it by hand the last 1000 feet or so. It smoothed out just when I came out of the soup. I had active sky once in my past simulators. I believe it was FS 2000. Been around fellas since FS_95. That was 16 years ago. We've come a looong way since.

I've got a flight set up for 6:00 a.m. this morning from KNKT to KJFK in the A2A. They had a tornado coming toward the main gate of Camp Leguene last night. This is going to kill some people I'm afraid. We're just too naive.

I just finished my flight into KJFK under IFR instructions at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. I made a baby cry and sloppy landing comment. Actually I thought I done pretty well considering hurricane conditions.

Oh buy the way; how high is the Empire State Building? I believe I clipped the antenna.

114 degree at 42 kts here. Flew from Jacksonville, NC direct to the current known center of the storm.

Best regards,
Robin.

I also took the Stratocruiser into the hurricane last night, like I said I was going to. Active Sky depicted the Muck and was giving some pretty strong winds, but I was quite honestly dissapointed by the turbulence it depicted. It gave 'Moderate' turbulence and for a few seconds 'Heavy' turbulence according to the Navigator as I flew pretty deep into it. Honestly, I experienced more shaking and bucking flying through run-of-the-mill thunderstorms. I don't know if that has to do with my particular Weather settings or that ASE just doesn't do a very good job. Maybe the latter...honestly never been very satisfied with that program. On the other hand, maybe that is how it is flying through a hurricane.

In any case, since my whole point had been to see the passengers' reactions to flying through this hellish weather, I didn't bother completing the flight, simply because it wasn't that all that hellish. I ended up ditching, just for fun, and watched the plane be blown indefinitely across the waves like a sailboat at about 85 knots!

ASE can only tell FS what weather to draw. FS is the ultimate problem there.

That video is almost unreal, and love the youtube comment for 4:49 "we made it to heaven guys" hehehe, the eye certainly is beautiful.
