Hi,

I'm a big Mustang fan following this thread and can't await the Mustang. Can you give a statement when you think it will be released? I think it will be a great product and i hope you will realize a realistic handling of the different cowl flaps this time.

Thank you and keep it up!

I'm guessing here you are referring to the operation of the Ram Air/Unrammed Filtered Air, Carb hot/cold linkage system? If so, the Accusim I'm confident the new 51 Accusim package will replicate this behavior in deep fidelity.

Yes, that's exactly what I thought about, I remember there was something twisted with the handles and it didn't work completely. Would be nice if it will work well in the accu sim.

I just kicked my wife out and filed for a divorce so I'd more time to enjoy all this.

Believe me, definitely worth it, and AccuSim is a lot cheaper! ;-)

Bring on the Mustang!!!!!

Gentlemen, just a couple more things from you since we are all BEGGING and Drooling over the P-51. I ran across a DVD about rebuilding a Merlin, "Inside the Rolls-Royce Merlin, Overhauling an Icon of the 1940's . This isn't a award winner, but they show you everything, and tell you about the problems that they had with the engine when it was first released and what they did to fix the problem. This video is a must have is you're as big into these planes as I am.

Second, if you haven't been to the Reno Air Races in Nevada, you must go. There is nothing in the world that will excite you as much as hearing a Merlin or Wright turning around 3500 to 4000 rpm, doing almost 500 mph. 50 to 250 ft off the deck. Life doesn't get any better than that.

Wife didn't get to go. :-D

BTW, thought I'd shamelessly cross-post pics (with credit to the original photographer known as "adflyer" on WiX) of Vlado recently at the Little Rock Airshow -

BTW, yes, that is a Horsemen patch on his canopy rail, and it does have a reason - Vlado was one of the originals with Jim Beasley, Ed Shipley, Dan Calderale, and Lee Lauderbeck. Now it's Ed, Jim, and ("newcomer") Dan Friedkin flying the show, but I'm sure Vlado would slot back in if they asked. :)

I'm pretty sure the A2A Mustang will do this quite well (as I've gotten the P-47 do to it), and appropriately shorten the life of your engine as a result. Not to sound harsh to this pilot as I don't fly the Mustang, but I do know that his extended attempt to run the engine the way he did is not good for it. I don't know his checklist, but whenever I've seen starts like that in person, it's been the failure to use and follow the proper starting procedures that's led to this. Following the procedures either resulted in a start or not, not this "in between" which isn't a good way to run an engine.

Dudley, do you know who that is? That's not Steve or Stevo, but it's Steve's plane...

Don't recognize him, but this can happen in the 51. You start on the primer and it's electric on the D. Depending on how hot or cold the engine was when the start was attempted, you can under prime or over prime a Merlin easily. It only takes an extra second or two on the primer switch to do it. As well the spark advance is linked to the throttle and it's easy to have it a tad too far forward at start.
Looks to me like it might have been a tad over primed and the mixture selected into "run" flooding it out. Notice the rich exhaust after the start as the mixture sorted itself out.

It has happened to a lot of of us really. The 51 is a "sensitive lady" :-))

Well, since nobody else has checked in on this one I'll take a stab at it. :-)

The famous Mustang whine everybody remembers for life once it's been heard is naturally a combination of many different sounds all blended together into what the ear experiences as a distinctive sound. A REAL savvy 51 display pilot will set up a Mustang for a photo pass to best display both the aircraft visually AND in sound.
Fot the Mustang, to really get the maximum effect sound wise, you set up descending in on the show line at METO power at around 280 to 300 mph with the radiator doors partially open. If you have plugs in the gun ports, removing them before a display maximizes the whine over the complete doppler range as the aircraft passes the crowd line in a slightly banked profile.
You can blindfold me even today and fly a hundred airplanes past me with a single Mustang in the mix and I'd point it out to you in a nano second :-)
You NEVER forget that sound!

Yep. Jim Beasley (former leader of the Horsemen) put up a couple of videos to show the difference between the 3 configurations and the changes in the "howl". First video was of a P-51 with fared over gun ports and there's no howl. Second is of the same P-51 with the ports uncovered and you get some howl (similar to that video). Third is of Happy Jack's Go Buggy which not only has open ports, but has the guns installed as well and the howl is quite loud. It's a major difference, but it's a really cool sound. :)

I'll see if I can dig through the thread where the videos were posted and copy the links here (they were on YouTube anyway).

Moonbeam McSwine. I creative, very creative name. It sticks in your head for awhile. Can't wait to fly the P-51 with accusim.
