Hi,

I have been logging about 8 hours already on the Cub (in 2 days) and I recently had my flight progress into nightfall. To my horror, I could not see a thing and I realised I was breaking the law by flying at night with absolutely no lights. :roll:

As such, I was wondering if it is at all possible to add lights in the update (or is the Cub generally built for day flying only?)?

I also noticed a slight glow in the cockpit (when I press 'L', all goes dark but the light comes on again) Is this a bug?

Again, thanks guys for accusim... never thought a simple prop could be so much fun and challenging.

Francis :x

Well, this is a J-3 simulation, which is modeled after the real deal.
As such, it would not be in keeping with the real deal to include any lighting, internal/external. The J-3 has no such thing. There are many good J-3 cub resources on the net that could help you become better familiar with this bird.
And regarding the bug question... I would think that since there is no lighting modeled, I would say with much certainty.. not a bug.
This is a day/VFR aircraft.
I hope that answers some questions you have.
Yeah you are right, this bird is a blast.

I think it's great that it's like the real thing and therefore a pity you can't fly it at night. But it is "as real as it gets".
That said. Press shift+L (the default setting for cockpit light) and the light goes out but then turns back on after about one second. It appears to be automatically on and does not stay off.

This snippet from the aircraft.cfg proves it:

[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing
light.0 =4, 1.200000, 0.000000, 1.600000, fx_A2A_J3CUB_vclight

Mark :)

Never tried the light experiment. I full on believe ya tho.
I am looking forward to exploring some bush flying in your neck of the woods.
Especially the new Tamworth scenery. Amazing stuff there. I have done most of my flying up here in Alaska where I live.
Time to explore some other parts of the planet. And the cub is perfect for...well...everything.
Cheers mate.

Much as I love the cub, I doubt it could do a transatlantic flight :lol:

Actually, the idea of adding nav lights to the Cub isn't totally inauthentic.

On page 34 of the 1946 owner's manual for the J3C-65 (referred to as some points as a "special", though it's clearly not the PA-11 - specs call for a 12-gallon, not an 18-gallon tank), there's this reference: "ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: An electrical system is not standard equipment on a Cub Special Trainer. The ignition switch support panel incorporates several punched holes for mounting the navigation light switch, etc."

And in a reference to a different model, on page 9 of the "How to Fly a Cub" booklet, there are these statements about the Piper Cub Super Cruiser: "It can be used for night flying and solo cross-country phases by the installation of lights and battery." And: "A deluxe model Piper Cub Super Cruiser is available, during peacetime, with special paint, navigation lights and battery."

The Super Cruiser isn't "our" Cub, but the J3C-65 is. So nav lights could reasonably be considered a user mod. Strobes and landing lights, probably not.

For now I'm sticking with the pure day-flying Cub, but it's nice to know the option is there.
