Some advice on Spitfire W3257 markings please?

Post by bladerunner900 »

I have a question for all Spitfire aficionados. I’m trying to make a representation of the Eric Lock Spitfire W3257 but cannot find any clear info on the fuselage markings. I’ve fond a picture showing the port side but nothing showing the starboard. Nose to tail, it reads E – FY. Would I be correct in thinking that the starboard, reading tail to nose, would be FY - E?

This will be, initially, for the Mk. IIb but hopefully, I can transfer it when the Mk. V is released. That is assuming it’s not already included. Regardless, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I've done so far.

The starboard side is what I'm not sure of. Are the markings in the correct orientation? I've seen pictures of other 611 squadron Spitfires like this but they could be earlier or later perhaps.

Thanks.
Steve.

Okay. I found an illustration of the starboard side that indicates that my assumption for the decals is correct, so I will go with that.

Thanks
Steve

Looks great 8) , and yes that is correct the FY is the sqn code and will always be together with the E the aircraft.

Thanks for that Lewis.

I wasn't sure, because I've seen pictures of later Mk. IX spitfires of 611 squadron with the individual aircraft code at the back and the squadron code at the front, on the starboard side.

Thanks
Steve

I believe different periods, different squadrons did different things.

Here's another one I'm working on. There seems to be a lot of debate on the net about how this one looked, but I think this is pretty close. I understand it should be MK329 so I'll be changing that.

It would be cool if it could carry a couple of beer kegs under the wings.

Funny, that first one. Normally, the squadron code was in front of the roundel and the individual letter behind it. Anybody known the reason for this different order?

A lot of scale modellers and arm chair historians would have you believe otherwise but I think this is just another case of 'war isn't standardised'

Just bumped into this post while googling online. I'm sure you guys have found the answer by now.

If you want to know the history of the code, you need to also check up on its pilot. For example, Spit MK392 belonged to Wing Commander Johnnie Johnson, and as for all commanders, they were allowed to place their initials as codes on their aircraft, hense where the JE J came from, (E of course was his middle name). The representation of "JR" stood for this particular aircraft being the Commanders "back up" aircraft, with him flying another JE-J, MK398.

As for Sptifre W3257, the code order should remain the same on both sides, with the division between the letters changing leaving a single code to the forward fuselage of the roundel. E-FY on the port and EF-Y on the starboard with the roundel on the "-".

I myself have made some Spitfire liveries, and if this community wish to expand to a more current system, check us out! live.warthunder.com/user/PROx
