Some are not aware FSX can be purchased electronically direct from Microsoft. $30 gets you a full blown FSX Gold with Acceleration.

It's invaluable when I run into folks who want to fly online and don't know how. I send them this link along with links to http://www.saitek.com and http://www.chproducts.com for controllers.

If there are places online you think that could benefit from knowing this link, feel free to copy and share it with any other forums or websites.

Also, here are links to FSX Service Pack 1 and FSX Service Pack 2, which need to both be installed:

SP1 download:

SP2 download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... p2_ENU.msi

Make sure you use a download manager, you're looking at close to 12 gigabytes.

I went to look into this (I'm in Australia) and as soon as you add the item to your cart the price changed from $30 to $50 (AUD), It seems Australia got a $20 mark up on an online download delivered product, good one Microsoft.

I recently switched to a new computer and I tried doing this, it works great. I have the luxury of having pretty fast internet, so I just left the download overnight and in the morning it had completed. The set-up is really good, but you have to be extremely careful about stuff - if you uninstall and then reinstall, you have to download all over again. In other words, back up early and back up often!

It's not for download but a worthful hint:

I made ISO'S of my two FSX discs and the Acceleration disc.
In combination with a SSD I could install FSX within a few minutes.

And backing up the on two different HDD's is bullet proof!

Can you download as an installation file that you can save? I have all the DVDs but there's something wrong with them - my player doesn't read them properly making it difficult to install.

Would be nice if Microsoft fixed some issues with FSX to make it better in Windows 7.

I am not aware of any FSX windows 7 issues I am aware off?

The whole 'run as admin' installation thing is actually more system wide 'good practice' and should be done across the board rather than just with FSX software.

Even running FSX as administrator may not be sufficient. FSX requires that "Full Control" be active in whatever directory you install it to, and Windows 7 doesn't automatically give it out, even to administrator accounts. You might need to create your directories manually and assign sufficient rights, depending on where you want FSX, then run your setup and install it there.

I wasted an entire afternoon with an error that evem M$ couldn't solve, and all I needed was a higher level of rights.

Its all basic folder permissions that have been the same since win95. However most users dont know how to use them and to honest have never needed too, so the advice is to generally install outside of program files so you dont get caught up in the security issues.

If you do install in programs files and want to get around the security issues, all you need to do is a little folder permission account handling and all sorted, no issues. However I should point out I'm an IT tech so this stuff is bread and butter for me.

Ah, Lewis, you have not yet experienced W7 in nanny mode.
It's my computer, and I have an administrator account, but W7
says the files belong to System, and won't let me authorize
myself to access them, no matter what I do. I've tried every
access method I know, and I'm still locked out.

Program Files>Properties>Security>Permissions>Nope, sorry.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes the Advanced button leads to
a Change Ownership page, sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes I'm allowed to go in and set permissions for administrators
to read-write-execute, no problem, except that when I then go to
try to read/write/execute, I'm still locked out, even though it says
right on the properties page that I'm allowed.

Maybe it's a matter of getting the sequence correct, changing a
series of folder permissions? Sometimes I get cheesed off and just
delete the damn folder. If I can't get into it, I'm sure the hell not gonna
leave it here for you to play with out of my sight, you bastard. Take that.

Which files are you referring PV? Sounds like you might have files with permissions tied to an old/different OS?

That requires some fiddling to sort but is still fixable.

Yes, in one instance that is probably right - I tried to copy
over the contents of some Documents folders from XP, which
should, I thought, the way I did it, and considering the
usual windows rules of folder copying, have dropped the
contents into the documents folder on the new machine,
but instead created new documents folders which it wouldn't
let me enter, and which I ultimately deleted. However, that
hasn't been the only instance, however my aged brain is
unable to recall the details of the others. I looked through my
program folders to try to jog my memory, but no go. They usually
involved me trying to alter the contents of a program folder
manually, or simply look under the hood of the application data
for some program, things I used to be able to do in XP with
no problem. Along the way I tossed out a bunch more folders
on the theory that if W7 really really wanted them it could damn
well reconstitute them itself. I guess I may have either solved or
deleted most of the problem areas, except for ones that I am
content to leave inaccessible, as I don't need to get into them,
and I vaguely hope that their inaccessibility means they render the
machine more secure against exploits.

I will certainly give you a call next time I'm stymied in this manner,
and you can reveal the secrets for me.

It's weird that people seem to have all these issues with control of their files and admin this and that - I've never had any issues with FSX stuff at all, from the first time I tried the demo on Vista 64 about 6 years ago, to now on Win7 64.

Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones? 8)

Can't say the same for certain combat sims, mind...

and as FSX is pestering me to phone MS every time I install now - maybe it's not a bad idea to think about a download version. Have to check my pennies.

I'm getting on in years, and I started using Flight Sim when it was done by SubLogic for MS in '82. I'm a licensed pilot, and have been simming ever since then, mainly because I couldn't afford to fly the real stuff, and partly because I needed to keep up my IFR skills. A couple of years ago I purchased FSX, and installed it on an XP machine. Flew it for awhile and then got busy elsewhere and sold the old machine.

A couple of months ago, I decided to dedicate my new Win 7 64-bit quad-core machine just for FSX, and took a chance that it would still work. To my surprise (because I took the caution of installing everything on my D drive to get it away from Windows 7 security) everything worked, and the sim flew better than ever before, with all the sliders maxed out! So far, I have added FS Commander, Radar Contact, and FSMeteo. But the real addition was the A2A Accu-Sim P-51! Always been a P-51 fan, and spend a lot of time over in Polk City Florida at Kermit Weeks' Fantasy of Flight. He flies his Cripes A-Mighty P-51 quite often, and I'd love to be in that cockpit!

And now I can! BUT - I logged right on to A2A and purchased the P-51 and Accu-Sim, and installed it immediately. Then I fired up FSX and chose the Mustang, ready to "Fly Now!" Imagine my surprise when the aircraft did not pop up, only the cockpit section. WTF!! What did I do wrong? Unfortunately, I decided to contact A2A first through e-mail and beg for help. Look, I'm 66 years old, so the ol' gray matter is a little slow now. But I still had enough sense to join the A2A community and look for someone who had the same problem. And what to my surprise, but I found that I needed SP1 and SP2, which I had never thought to even look for, let alone install.

Everything was updated, and I am now the proud owner of a P-51 parked on the ramp at Orlando-Sanford (KSFB). You guys have a great support group up here, and I hope to keep up with this stuff regularly. I have only one quick question right now: I expected the plane to boot up in the shut-down state, being so realistic and all, and was surprised when it appeared on the active, running. As I as of yet do not know how to run all of the switches, the A/C sputtered and quit before I could do anything. I promptly found most of the switches to cut the electrical power and moved the mixture to idle cut-off, and then moved the plane to the ramp I'd like to begin any flight from. Now, will there be any problems with a re-start, as I allowed it to stall out? This stark realism is going to take some getting used to, but I love it! Finally an aircraft that I have to tend to from the get-go!

Looking forward to more visits up here. Great job, all! I'll finally get to fly the bird I always wanted to fly!
