Since I started painting the P-51 I've noticed that on the inside of the gear doors there is a strip of chrome/metal... Whats the purpose of this?

Cheers!

Good-day,

I believe the "strip" you mention, assuming you mean the inner clam-shell doors, is a typical polish/wear strip, for the tires to rub on during extension. Often unpainted. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong here?

Yep Joseph - That's the "strip" I was thinking about. And I figured it had something to do with wear! I guess in my mind, I can't visualize why just that portion of the clamshell would be more prone to getting rubbed on.

Cheers!

Bud

Actually your almost there. It helps to force the door open with the tires in case the hydraulics fail. Gravity. Kinda like a rub strip. Drop your gear with no hydraulics and you'll see.

Yes! Right you are. And per the P-51 flight manual (something every real P-51 pilot should read, but not all do) the procedure isn't that complicated.

And if your Mustang is operated by Stallion 51, and called Crazy Horse, the whole of the inside of the door is polished, so it's hard to make out the central strip... ;-)
