I'd like to share my first publicly available repaint. I'm an avid air racing fan, and the civilian Mustang just makes me think of all the famous stock racers of the past. I chose Miss Candace as my first paint job because I like how the simplicity of the paint was set off by the surrounding highly polished aluminum skin. This is more of a combination of a couple of the schemes worn by this plane before it was chopped down and turned into one of the most highly modified racers of all time.

Great job Wombat, and thanks for including a different interior for the civilian model.
How would you go about putting the blue prop knob into another plane?

I think you did a great job on the repaint. My only concern was the prop.dds and prop_in.dds was too dominant with red. I gave it the Musicman touch. Please feel free to try my mod for it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?i2t1fwk3zd6ijh7

I felt the red needed to be more transparent when running/blur. A little more realistic IMHO.

Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you like the repaint. As for the cockpit, I didn't do the work myself, I found it here it this thread:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=33154&hilit=civilian+cockpits+2.1

I had wanted to make an all black cockpit, but when I found this I liked how it looked and decided to save myself the work.

I can't speak for how he did it, but what I would do is open the various cockpit textures you want to change in some DXT to BMP converter, or use a DXT plugin of some kind, send it to your editor of choice. After unlocking the layer create a new layer, or make a copy of that layer, on top of that one and basically repaint the knobs in the color of your choosing on that new layer, using whatever blending mode looks the best to you. Save your work often so you can go back in case something goes awry. Then flatten your image and send it back to be converted back to DXT. Check it out in the sim and repeat as needed until you're pleased with the results.

I had to send this main skin to the sim about 10 times before I got the text on the cowling to wrap properly, so either you have patience or you learn patience when you do repaints. I'm still learning, lol.

Yes, that does look much better! Thanks a bunch! I'm still a total newb at repaints and I've been learning at every step, but I still have much to learn.

Wombat; Thank you for the explanation of how to do an interior, it is way beyond anything I can understand. It sure looks like an enjoyable thing to do, maybe someday
I'll give it a try.

I thought that maybe one of the files in the textures that are included with the plane could be added to the texture file of a different P-51 and it would change the Prop
knob from black to Blue. If this is the case, do you know which file it is that contains the Blue prop knob?

The Blue prop knob looks like it belongs there instead of the black one .

Are you trying to put just the blue knob in another A2A Mustang? Because that would be pretty easy if you have Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, or even Photoshop Elements or GIMP. You just need an editor that has the ability to work with layers.

Or if you wanted to replace the entire cockpit you could just copy all the cockpit textures into whatever other texture folder you want.

Wombat: Yes I just wanted to add the blue knob to some other P-51's.
I do not have any of the photoshop equipment.
I just thought that I might be able to add just one of the files from the texture file that came with your plane.
If that is what I would need to do to get the blue knob, do you know which file it is that sets the color of the knob?
Thanks again.

Ok, here's what you would need to copy to get the blue Prop control knob:

p51_c.dds
p51_c3.dds

Doing only these two files will give a mismatched cockpit, but they should give you the blue knob.

Now if you want to have the entire black cockpit along with the blue knob copy all of these files:

p51_c.dds
p51_c1.dds
p51_c2.dds
p51_c3.dds
p51_c4.dds
vc_gxmla.dds

Only put these into the texture folder of the paint you want to see the blue knob, ie texture."plane name"

As with anything else you do, make a back up copy of the folder before you make any changes. That way you have a working copy to go back to in case anything goes wrong.

Good luck!

Thank you, I've been using MSFS since FS2000, still learning new things.

EDIT: I put the blue prop knob into another plane, it looks much better than the black knob. Was very easy to do. I may add it to all my P-51's. Thanks again!

Great work! I really like the early air racing paints.
N79111 raced under a bunch of different names, would be nice some of her other schemes done for the A2A Mustang.

Race #X Specter
Race #44
Race #69 Jeannie
Race #9 Leeward Air Ranch Special.

And of course the original Galloping Ghost Race #77 raced at Cleveland.
