Nice flight today

Post by Paughco »

Flew the P-40 out of Arlington, did a touch and go at Friday Harbor, and greased her in back home at Arlington. This picture was taken out of the cockpit on the way up to Friday Harbor.

Thank you for the word. Love that P-40. Great clip.

Just got done reading "The Intruders" by Stephen Coonts. Great story. His writing style (IMHO) is somewhere between E.K. Gann and Tom Clancy.

I am sorry to report that a quick flight in my P-40 (Army 155) has sufficiently scratched that itch, which was whether I wanted to buy a T-6 or a Civ P-51D. The P-40 took care of everything and I am all right. We blasted out of Arlington, did a quick touch and go at Skagit Regional, and then flew back and aced the landing at Arlington. I'm getting used to the new Thrustmaster T.16000 FCS stick and the HOTAS throttle. Yeah, I still don't have "real" rudder pedals, but then I'm sitting here on an exercise ball and not in a real chair, so I wonder how that would work anyway? I thought I had a really nice approach, and I played the ailerons and rudder to get her down on the runway, pretty near to the centerline, with a nice wheel landing. Plenty of runway, so no pressure. Maybe if I forgot about finishing the 2017 GAAR, or trying to bring up my TWA pilot log, and focused on flying the P-40 (purity of essence) I could get her back into Darrington for some more of that fried chicken at the IGA grocery store. I'll have to work on that.

The P-40 is still totally where it's at!

Had another nice flight in the P-40 yesterday. Took off from Rwy 29 at Bowers Field (KELN) in Ellensburg, WA at about 1230.
The wind was pretty brisk: 298 at 24 kts, with gusts to 32. Climbed to about 18,500 and flew just over the cloud deck and the Cascades.
I managed to find a hole, where I quickly descended to below the ceiling to about 4,500 and made a beeline for Arlington Airport (KAWO)
and landed on Rwy 16. Lots of fun in the P-40. She's running great.

Here we are just heading out:

I really like this one, as we're flying around a few of the higher tops, transiting the Cascade Range:

And here we are, parked in our usual spot at KAWO:

It was a good flight. No screaming baby. No groaning co-pilot.
