Beautiful image of the P-40. Maybe early 1943? The star doesn't have the yellow band around it.

i believe the bands were only used during Op.Torch on the Moroccan side, not the eygpt side where the 65th/57th groups were located post july 1942 :)

Ahh I didnt know that, I was under the impression the yellow band was universal for the period of the operation to aid recognition.

Great picture :) . These are P-40F's, powered by RR Merlin engines. Note the lack of carb air intake on the top of the engine cowlings.

Later the Fs had the Merlin removed and an Allison installed and was noted as the P-40R, I guess the Mechanics hated working on the Merlins.
