How to, do a prop control on warm-up??

Post by mgr »

Hiya,

From the "how to FLYING THE SPITFIRE: Flying a Circuit topic":
Throttle to 2,200 r.p.m., magnetos individually checked, drop of no more than 160 r.p.m., Propeller to COARSE PITCH- check for r.p.m. drop, then up to 2,400 r.p.m., close throttle slightly, check that r.p.m. remains at 2,400, then return Propeller to FINE PITCH, throttle to smooth, low idle.
From the A2A Checklist:
11c. If ROTOL CONSTANT-SPEED AIRSCREW: Slowly reduce airscrew control to 2400 R.P.M.
Throttle down a little and observe R.P.M. to be CONSTANT at 2,400 R.P.M.
Then, set airscrew control lever fully forward to: FULL FINE PITCH
Still confused how to do this Check, smoothly and correctly?

What do i do:
- RPM to Fine (SHIFT+F4)
- Throttle to 2 PSI
- RPM down to 2400 via (SHIFT-F2)
- If i touch the throttle even a slightness the RPM goes down with it

Any pointers?

Marcel

The way I’ve always done this is described in the A2A documents by Mitchell G.

Specifically, this is the portion of the test you’re referencing:

1. Select ground crew to hold down tail

2. Propeller pitch control full forward (fine pitch))

3. Advance throttle to +6 1/4 boost

4. Slowly reduce propeller control to achieve 2400 RPM

5. Reduce throttle slightly to check that RPM is stable around 2400 RPM. Once confirmed move propeller level full forward again.

( the needle bounces around a little, but it should be stable “near” to 2400 RPM..mine bounces around but the average is very close to 2400)

6 Check oil pressure @ 80 lbs.

7. Check magnetos ( slight RPM drop)

Reduce throttle to smooth idle.

Remember you have to accomplish this fairly quick or you will overheat! So mentally rehearse the steps and then accomplish the checks quickly.

What Jacques said.

A word on procedure...You will find many different suggestions, methods, target numbers etc mentioned in different places.
The A2A Pilot's Notes were prepared on those of Wartime issue as close to the date the aircraft is modelled as possible.

If you use these, you will (with the exception of minimum oil temperature 15C ) be using more conservative figures than were later brought in.
