Here's one I've been working on. Based on what I can find out about K9906 of 65 Squadron, based at Eastleigh England, 1939 and flown by Roland Stanford Tuck. Any feedback would be welcomed, particularly about the under side detail. Did they not have roundels at this time? I also understand that the ailerons were left unpainted due to concerns about weight and possibly the elevators as well.
As I said, any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Steve.

Re: Spitfire K9906
Looks awesome I'll have to give it a whizz later on. The colouring at this time was all over the place BTW, lots of changes in short spaces of time from ministry, so by the time this stuff gets down to unit level in the field it's all very hap hazard and you end up with a wide range depending on how a given unit was run from a station stand point. The black/white underside can be thought of as the forerunner of the famous D-Day stripes, as a means of quick ID on combat, they didn't last too long after France Fell.

Re: Spitfire K9906
Thanks for your input Lewis.
No doubt it took a while for the RAF to standardise the basic spec and form of new(ish) aircraft. What with the imminent outbreak of war in 1939 and all. Even after the start, design and form tended to vary from squadron to squadron. Probably due to the individuals interpretation, or lack thereof, of ministry guidelines. This leaves a lot of room for interpretation and no doubt fuels a lot of debate on the subject.
I'll pack it up and post a link here when I finish checking her out.
Cheers.

Re: Spitfire K9906
Another nice repaint. Thanks. Bob Stanford Tuck was something of a childhood hero to me back in the 60's as he was the archetypal fighter pilot and I still have a copy of his biography "Fly For Your Life". There's a picture of this plane in the book which shows the port side as having sky or white undersides. I believe at this time that all the Spitfires in service were built by Supermarine and their interpretation of Sky was rather more light blue than the usually accepted "sky type S" or duck egg green commonly thought to have been used at the time, and typically used by Castle Bromwich built aircraft. Here's a link to the picture I mention above:
http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-art ... -myth.html or http://www.warhistoryonline.com/wp-cont ... itfire.jpg
As you can see, paint schemes were in some transition here, the 3 Spitfires furthest away from the camera have black painted port undersides, and probably white starboard undersides, which was done as an aid to aircraft recognition in early 1940. My belief is that at the time the picture was taken, it was in all sky blue underside, but was probably painted black/white undersides soon after. As an aside, note also that none of the planes have armour protection.
If anyone is interested, there's a website for Stanford Tuck - http://www.stanfordtuck.com/
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks guys! Hey Mike. If you're interested, I did a rendition of BL336 some time ago. Have a look if you like and let me know if I missed something.

Re: Spitfire K9906
Hi Steve. I have BL336 already. It was one of the first I added on after buying the A2A Spitfire. It looks pretty good to me. Certainly, it compares well with the pictures I have seen.

Mike

Re: Spitfire K9906
Okay Mike, that's fine. This is just a heads up then, that BL336 is one of the textures I updated last month to use 8.8.8.8 format dds. Basically it improves the quality and gives a higher definition to any artwork. It quadruples the file size but the effect can be stunning with intricate artwork. I would have introduced them before but I am still unsure of the effects on less capable systems. But I think the trend is leaning towards higher performance machines, so I suppose I will discontinue the rougher DXT5 format altogether soon enough. Besides, it's easy enough to re-save as DXT5 now, what with the free tools out there.
Cheers.

Re: Spitfire K9906
Great repaint, thank you very much.
Re Mike's picture I note that Spitfire 'O' appears to have a roundel on the port underside wing whilst none of the others do.
Very interesting.
Cheers and Beers
