Copalis Beach strip, Washington, USA, Planet Earth

Post by Paughco »

Last spring my wife and I drove down to Copalis Beach, where we spent a few wonderful days in Cabin 28 at Iron Springs Resort (http://www.ironspringsresort.com/). Cabin 28 is set apart from all the other cabins, so my wife selected that one. Only problem is that Cabin 28 doesn't have Wi-Fi or cable. They do have a wide selection of DVDs down at the main cabin, however. I selected "Casablanca" as the "romantic" movie, and then ALL the Terminator movies.

We walked on the beach and saw an airstrip, Copalis State Airport, (S16 http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/aviation/AllSta ... sState.htm). Very cool. No way could I get in there with the P-40, or with the Comanche, but it looked like a natural for the J-3 with the tundra tires. Today I decided to go for it.

Took off from Westport (14S https://www.airnav.com/airport/14S) with the J-3:

Never got much above a 1,000 feet:

Got her down in one piece:

Should'a brought the wife and some camping gear. She couldn't come along, so I was happy just to check it out. Now I'm outta there:

Very nice flight. The Cub is loads of fun!

Oh yeah - they're not kidding when they say watch out for a nose over with the tundra tires on asphalt. I came pretty close to losing it.

On the Van's Air Force forum there was (I can't find it now and I have tried) an account, with pictures, of a guy's trip to Copalis beach in an RV7. So tundras aren't strictly necessary.
