Flaring too high above runway?

Post by gulredrel »

Hello,

Having flown the Cub for some days now and did touch and goes and full stop landings.
I still have the problem that I almost always flare too high above the runway, loosing speed and than drop to the runway too hard.

What's the best way to judge height above the runway?
With Cherokee or Cessnas or the heavy warbirds I don't have that problem. Maybe because the viewpoint is much higher?

Thanks
Jens

Hey Jens,

it can be just practice, I often find the same as you are experiencing after flying other aircraft for a while, in particular if the other sim aircraft are not tail draggers. Also remember the cub is about as slow of an aeroplane as your going to get so flaring too early can be easy when so familiar with faster aircraft.

thanks,
Lewis

Open the door and Look out the side it will give you a better view of the ground. Personally when I fly tail draggers I never try to flare or land I simply try to fly about a foot off the ground while reducing power and make a beautiful 3 pointer every time.
