pitot heat?

Post by Merlin59 »

I am flying my new cub in very cold weather. About 25 degrees f. Totally lost my airspeed indicator. Pardon the newbie question but is there no pitot heat on this bird? I may be wrongly assuming this is the problem but I'll bet not. Obviously it's still very flyable but you don't know till you ask right? Thanks and try not to snicker too much! :)

Hi.
As far as I am aware there is no pitot heat in the cub. There is carb heat which is essential.
I assume because it is such a forgiving aircraft to fly with a very low stall speed that in the "unlikely" event that it iced up you would be able to land without an ASI.
That I assume is what you had to do.
So you will have to make do with carb heat and cabin heat only.

Thanks for the answer! Yea, it still flew great. Strange the things that would make you panic in a bigger airplane you just pass off in the cub. I am truly enjoying it completely. My landing must have been fairly good as nervous Heidi didn't even complain. Course I didn't tell her I had no idea how fast we were coming down! :P Thanks again for the answer! You truly are speedy!

You are welcome.
Put on the talkative Heidi she will blast you if you don't cream the landing.

Hi Gents,

Since my wife is a former Cub pilot and owner, I asked her. She gave me a withering look and said, "no battery, no generator, no lights, no radio... no pitot heater." And she gave me that look again because while she's the pilot, I'm the plane crazy person and should know better.

Well if you can't ask a question you can't learn. And sadly I admit to not knowing about a lot of things and usually at my age when I learn the answer, I realize I've forgotten the question!
