My new P-51 repaints

I have just uploaded 2 new repaints on Simviation\FSX\Payware - both Tuskegee Airmen from the 100th FS. I will post any future upload announcements under this posting in order to keep this forum less cluttered.

Here is a 3D shot of #10 Duchess Arlene, flown by Lt Robert Williams who wrote the manuscript for the HBO movie "The Tuskegee Airmen". If you can cross your eyes and put the two images together it will be in 3D. This occurred by accident as I was taking screenshots for my upload icons. You can do it yourself if you care to. I was in Chase Plane mode and took these shots at slightly different angles on the same horizontal plane. This is what happens with our own two eyes when we see in stereoscopic vision. To me the radiator intake looks a bit like it's behind the aircraft, but it's pretty neat for an accident.

Here's a shot of "Bunnie", flown by Capt. Roscoe Brown who commanded the 100th FS.

Most all of my repaints depict modern birds as you would find at an airshow. I'm an aviation historian at heart and strive to stay loyal to original WW2 paint schemes. I skirt around modern P-51s sometimes an use a bit of "poetic license" in this regard in order to capture the original wartime examples.
Hope you enjoy them! More repaints are on the way...

A couple more additions on Simviation are a pair of National Guard repaints both with polished props.

'Stang Evil is the local Mustang I've seen a couple times and used photo details from it in my paint kit.

Interesting slit vents on each side of the radiator of this block 30-NT Mustang.

I have uploaded my modern cockpit files to Simviation. It's nothing too fancy but it will make some nice changes. The cfg file uses gauges from the Kingair and the ultra-light digitals.

And you get a new seat that isn't worn out. Woo hoo!

Could you please upload it to SOH, Avsim, or Flightsim as well? I do not like or use Simviation.

I love that VC mod! :D

Thanks guys! I do want to upload my growing collection onto SOH. That seems to be the hub of talent and knowledge but I haven't really been around the block yet. Had lots of trouble in the past with SOH creating and maintaining a registration. Some feedback on the best place to post would sure help me out. I'd rather post on everyone else's preferred site.

Here's my latest upload to Simviation\Payware - two versions of Man-O-War. First belongs to the Ward Family with black anti-glare and what appears to be RAF green stripes.

Online research usually turned up profiles using AAF OD.

While watching the Roaring Glory Warbirds video I saw the fuel tank panels where the drain cocks are located so I added those to my paint kit.
Image

I always liked the Rolls Royce logo on Mustangs so I've been adding those to some of my paints as well.

Happy Flying!
Gonna take it easy for a while finishing a wild and fun racing repaint based on an experimental disruptive paint scheme dating from early WW2 - my Razzle Dazzle model-D Mustang...

Thank you David and welcome to the forums! I can help with any art graphics you need (or anyone else for that matter). I am in the habit of re-creating fuselage art that I find online so I have a collection of art that you see on my aircraft saved as Paintshop Pro "picture tubes". These are scaleable clip arts and assume Photoshop has the same feature. I can pass any along to you as PSD or make requests you have. Just finished the art for Petie 2nd and working on Excalibur - two blue-nosed 51s of the 352nd FG.

The panel looks great, but why a gunsite? and I cannot get it to work. You say to put all 3 files in the FSX folder but it already has a sim objects file. I would be willing to pay for this if there was a auto installer with it. Thanks anyway

Hi oak. You don't want to put the files into the main FSX folder. They need to go into the Mustang's folders. My installation looks like this:
Image

It will help to understand A2A's folder structure. A2A uses the folder named "texture" within the "\WWII_FIGHTERS_P51D" folder to hold all the common files used by each and every Mustang paint scheme. They do this to save hard-drive space and it's a clever set up. The key to their system is the "texture.cfg" file. That file provides FALLBACKS to point FSX in the right direction to find required files. FSX will look first in each plane's paint texture folders for required files. For example, FSX will first look in the folder "...\WWII_FIGHTERS_P51D\texture.snooks" for numerous files that paint the cockpit, prop, glass, etc. It won't find them there, but it WILL read the "texture.cfg" file instead. The "texture.cfg" file tells FSX to fall back to other folders in its quest for particular texture files.

Below is part of my instructions in my readme file. In reality there are more than 2 ways to install my files, but trying to keep things simple. If you understand A2A's system of doing things there are different ways to play around with file installation and locations. To be honest, with modern computers having such huge hard-drives, I wouldn't worry about having redundant files. The installation only gets complicated if you want to save space on your hard-drive. The easiest method is #2 below. That way you don't run the risk of copying over A2A's original files and getting ticked off at me. :D In the screenshot above you'll notice my files are 4x larger - that's because they are 888-8 dds format. The regular DXT5 distorted them too much and since they're smaller files to begin with I figured why not. You can use the file size as a tag for my files. The gunsight is built into the model so we're stuck with it until probably the WoP3, which might have different options. Not my department. Like to sell these but it's mostly A2A's art so not gonna happen.

Hope that helps more than add confusion.
John

INSTALLATION (for changing VC color scheme) There are 2 ways to do this - for INDIVIDUAL Mustangs, or ALL of them at once.
1. Unzip to a temporary location.
2. To change INDIVIDUAL Mustang cockpits:
Paste files "p51_c1.dds, p51_c2.dds & p51_c3.dds" from this download into each P-51 repaint texture folder of which you wish to remodel the cockpit. You're done. (This may be simpler but uses up more drive space)
3. To change the cockpit color for ALL of your Mustangs:
BACK-UP YOUR EXISTING FILES "p51_c1.dds, p51_c2.dds & p51_c3.dds" inside the "WWII_FIGHTERS_P51D\texture" folder; or just back-up the entire folder.
Copy & paste files p51_c1.dds, p51_c2.dds and p51_c3.dds from this download into the "WWII_FIGHTERS_P51D\texture" folder.

Petie 2nd textures uploaded to Simviation

I have two new repaints that should be appearing on Simviation\FSX\Payware shortly. Both are of "Petie 2nd" and I'm dubbing them Bad Petie and Sweet Petie. One is Petie 2nd during WW2 after the single black D-Day stripes have been removed from the tops of the wings and stabs. It's a bit dirty and used - based on a limited number of original WW2 photos. This shot shows it in similar fashion to when Lt Col John C. Meyer shot down a FW-190 after take-off from Y-29 airfield before his gears were up. However, on that occasion he was flying "Petie 3rd" after "Petie 2nd" had a run-in with a jeep.
Image

Sweet Petie is a modern Mustang all polished and clean. There are at least two modern "Petie 2nd" Mustangs. This one is N314BG without the overall silver paint. Since FSX aircraft don't need protection from the elements I prefer to let them shine.

Have a great weekend everyone
John
