Thanks,DVM: I'm going to buy that book. Red didn't care to relate his combat experiences in much detail, but I often wondered what it was like for him. Flying day in and day out subject to intense flak and constant small arms fire was not something a person would care to recall, especially if you lost friends in the process. I knew a lot of Vietnam helicopter pilots who felt that way. Anyway, I think the book will give me some good insight.

In case you do not have it, Johnsons book about flying the P-47 is also a very instructive read!

Thanks for the heads up. A great book I have read it twice at least over the years. I have an old paper back I bought at a used book store for less than a dollar and it is one of my library treasures printed in 1959. I checked Amazon and it is still in print. If anyone out there that has not read this book you should, one of the best WWII fighter pilot bios.
