toby23,

Check the beginning of this thread for the proper procedure for approach and landing. After gear down and canopy open, lots of power, as much as 40-42” M.P and 2550 rpm may be necessary depending upon your gross weight. Lower the flaps incrementally and only when on final. Do not fly this airplane at less than 125mph indicated at any time, and carry some power into the flair, closing the throttle slowly when in landing attitude. Fly a “high circuit”; that is, do not begin your descent until you are on final. You should be at 1000’ above field level on the downwind leg.

Most WWII P-47s returning from a mission landed fairly light, all ordinance and drop tanks gone, reserve tank empty and main tank no more than ½, probably often less than that. When U.S.A.A.F. pilots practiced landing circuits, the reserve tank was empty, the main tank was rarely completely filled, and no drop tanks or ordinance was carried.

We are very glad that you are enjoying the Accusim P-47. It was developed from the ground up to be as realistic and accurate as possible to the real thing. U.S.A.A.F. pilots had hundreds of hours of training before they flew the P-47; it’s not a beginner’s airplane by any means. This does not mean; however, that you cannot learn to fly it in much less time than that. By carefully following the procedures which we have provided in the manual and on this thread, with a little practice you should soon be able to land this airplane smoothly and confidently every time.

Mitchell

I've just posted a question in another thread Here, well nearly two hours ago now. Then I found a link to this thread, and have been reading it ever since. What a read! Excellent tips, wonderful advice, and extremely well written too. I'd like to thank Mitchell especially for giving me something I have been lacking for a very long time. The knowledge to execute approaches properly.

Yes I can put a plane on the ground without smashing it to bits, but not in the fashion it should be done. I have learned a lot tonight. I've never been any good with approaches, I'm either too slow, or too low, or sometimes both. Other times I'm too high, and have to go around.

If you clicked the link above, then you will know that I haven't yet bought the P47, but I have been flying the A2A Spitfire lately. I can't say I understand fully what has been said here in this thread, but I do understand most it, and I now have to go look something up. My Spitfire landings are getting pretty good now, I've managed to do 3 point landings on a regular basis, so I'm very pleased with myself. I'd really like to get this P47, but the question I asked really needs to be answered before I make a decision.

I was wondering Mitchell, if you wouldn't mind popping over there and possibly giving me the benefit of your experience? A simple yes or no is all I'm asking for really.

Regards
Tony
