PHNL/KPDX

Post by alan CXA651 »

Hi.
Today i am attempting the return flight to KPDX portland from PHNL , i say attempt , because i have 3 old engines , so need to treat them gently , and the flight is over 2000nm mainly over the ocean , with no nearby diversions if i need any.
Going by the enroute winds aloft , no sig/air mets , winds at FL300 290/54 FL240 283/37 FL180 264/34 my FL270
Sofar i have encountered heavy turbulance on climb at vor CKH , This comes under sigmets , of which there was none reported , ASN lies.
T/O was from 26L as phnl atis was 310/3 , at liftoff , i turned gently left untill i was hdg for first waypoint VOR CKH.
Well ATIS enroute was screwed again , a few times i encountered heavy to moderate turbulance , even though enroute had NO AIR/SIG METS turbulance of that level comes under sigmets .
Decent was going fine till final turn , when the speed suddenly and unexpectedly bled of , at this stage the flaps where at 20 , lining up for the ils 10R , hastily disconnected auto pilot , and opened throttle and the trim had to be set in the correct position , as it had run all the way back on auto pilot , recovered from stall , in time to lower gear and flaps to full , but gunning the tied old engines , even for that short recovery time , as severly damaged all the engines , engine 4 is still showing excellent condition , but 1/2/3 are now fair , how much more milage i can get from them is anyones guess , short flight or crew training flight might be in order , in case of engine failure.
Landing was smoothe , but no applause from cabin or comment from copilot , dreading the comments on career , thats next to look at.

Good luck! Are you going to fly it real time? I flew from KMCC McCellan, CA to KNPL Honolulu, HI no-stop in the Connie, 8:35 hours. My butt was sore after the flight! I was waiting the whole time for A2A to spring a malfunction on me any time after the "Equal Time Point" over the ocean; but all went well. I however; landed on gas fumes with the FE crying like a baby! Have a great trip and enjoy what ever surprises come along!

Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down!
