So, I tune the NDB frequency on ADF receiver 1(382.000, YPK). My altitude is 13'000 feet, distance to NDB is 60 nm. Why there's no signal?

Too far from the NDB?

Sometimes FSX just doesn't let you pick up beacons, even if you're right on top of them. It does to me, anyway. Really annoys me.

Where exactly are you trying to tune in?

The reason for asking is that when I look up the "YPK" nav aid, it comes up as a High Alt VOR on 112.40.

There are two types of beacon in FSX for NDBs - compass locator and MH. Compass locator are lower power than the MH beacons. What MH stands for I'm not sure, but that is the difference as far as FSX concerned.

It is a shame they didn't go to the trouble of modelling NDBs more fully including ionospheric effects, attenuation based on terrain, etc.. It would have been relatively straight forward to do (this is done in DCS:BS) but for some reason MS were too focused on graphics. :(

I'd love to see A2A come up with an internal ADF/NDB model that modelled the system more fully as it is quite a capable instrument given how primitive it is, and it can give you quite a bit of information if you understand how it works. One extreme annoyance is that you can't even tune it properly as FS seems to require a station is tuned for 1 second before it appears active on the instrument. :?

Best regards,
Robin.

Probably, we're speaking about different YPK's. I'm speaking about the NDB near Abbotsford airport(CYXX).

YPK is a VOR called PITT MEADOWS located at Pitt Meadows (CYPK) airport. It's freq is 112.4

The only NDB's around Abbotsford is XX 344 (M) 068º 4.3nm CULTUS LU 214 (M) 252º 12.3nm and WHITE ROCK WC 332 (L) 067º 14.7nm

I'm guessing you were trying for one of these and had the freq wrong. Or thought YPK was a NDB.

Here's a complete listing of all of the Navaids in the vicinity of CYXX.
Image

The "YPK" VOR is the same Pitt Meadows VOR already mentioned at 112.40. If you were tuned to that one, it has a range of almost 200 miles so you would have been able to pick that one up.

Here's is a graphic showing the location of the NDB on frequency 382.00 near CYXX.
Image

The 382 NDB is located 58 miles from CYXX and you mentioned that you were about 60 miles from the 382 NDB, so this would seem about right.

The problem may have been that the 382 NDB only has a range of 37.5 miles, so at 60 miles you were out of it's range.

Note: All pictures were shot from Airport Design Editor(ADE).
