P-40 repaints

Post by jcblom »

I liked the idea of a thread showing all repaints for one aircraft, so maybe the mods can make this one a sticky too?
I'll list all repaints that I have done for the P-40, beginning with:

Tomahawk MkIIB AK402 GA-F was the assigned aircraft of Plt Off Neville Duke in november 1941 in Egypt. He was to become the leading ace in the MTO, with at least 27 aircraft destroyed by the end of the war.

Tomahawk MkIIB AK490 was delivered to no 73 squadron in september 1941 with two other Tomahawks. The were kept for a few weeks only, and kept their Europea colors. They were also decorated with the squadron's pre-war markings. It was written off on 21 october 1941, after being hit by ground looping AN326, while with No 5 Sq, SAAF.

Tomahawk MkIIB AM386 was flown by FltLt Alan Rawlinson. He was already an ace when he was assigned this aircraft in july 1941 in the Syrian campaign. It only completed seven sorties, as on 22 august, Rawlinson was performing aerobatics when his starboard tailplane and elevator broke off. He was able to land the aircraft due to his considerable flying skills.

This is a repaint for the A2A simulations payware P-40B, depicting the aircraft flown by Lt Welch on 7 december 1941 in Pearl Harbor. After receiving his wings and commission in January, 1941, Lt. Welch was posted to the 47th Pursuit Squadron, 15th Pursuit Group, at Wheeler Field, Oahu, Hawaii. At dawn on December 7, 1941, 2nd Lt. Welch and another pilot, 2nd Lt. Ken Taylor, were coming back from a Christmas dinner and dance party (with big band orchestra) at a roof-top hotel in Waikiki, that ended in an all-night poker game. They were still wearing mess dress when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Welch telephoned an auxiliary strip at Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore to have two Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters prepared for takeoff. He and Taylor immediately drove his Buick at high speed to join the air battle. Taking off with only 30 cal ammo in the wing guns, Welch claimed two kills of Aichi D3A Val dive bombers over Ewa Mooring Mast Field. The first enemy aircraft was only damaged and it made it back to its carrier while the second was finished off by Ken Taylor, shortly before he landed at Wheeler Field to get 50 cal ammo for his two cowl guns. On his second sortie, Welch shot down a Val (which was behind Ken Taylor) and the Val crashed in the community of Wahiawa, then Welch got three Mitsubishi Zero fighters about five miles west of Barbers Point. Both Welch and Taylor were nominated for the Medal of Honor by Gen. Henry H. Arnold, but were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for their actions. The Medal of Honor recommendation was turned down because he had taken off without orders.

This is a repaint for the A2A P-40B, representing a Tomahawk MkIIB of the Royal Egyptian Air Force. The REAF received six ex-RAF Tomahawk IIB's in april 1943, and a further six on october 1943. Tey were originally assigned to 6 squadron (replacing Hurricanes), but the unit was renumbered to become 17 sqn. They were replaced by Hurricanes in 1945, and later used as trainers, possibly as late as 1947.

Tomahawk MkIIB #3817 of the Turkish Air Force. The TAF obtained 42 Tomahawk IIB's from the RAF Middle East aircraft pool in 1941 and 1942. They had seen extensive service while in the RAF, and thus had a limited service life with the TAF. They were delivered to the 14th Air Battalion, 3rd Air regiment in Gaziemir. In 1943 they were transferred to the 6th Air regiment. In 1944, they were being replaced by Spitfire V's, but soldiered on until late 1946 as trainer aircraft. Their serials with the TAF were 3801 to 3842.

Tomahawk MkIIB AM392 of 250 Squadron, flown by Australian pilot Sgt Bob Whittle, Egypt August-October 1941. "Nux Vomica" (deadly poison) was the name given to this aircraft by Sgt Whittle, who used it to shoot down a Me109. The aircraft was later used by the SAAF until it was struck off charge on 1 july 1943.
