Turn the turbo knob in the center, near the throttle and mixture controls. It should be set to 8 for takeoff. I highly recommend at least skimming the manual before first flights.

Yes the B-17 is almost a fly by Dial affair. Set power and then fly using the dial, nice and easy and designed this way by Boeing for the young lads being expected to fly the aircraft.

thanks,

I guess my question should have been..what does the turbo do to change mp ,or if I did it manually?

The turbos compress intake air and send it to the carburetor. The dial in the cockpit controls the position of the wastegates, which control turbo speed. A higher number on the dial = the wastegate closed further = higher manifold pressure.

Turbo operation is covered in detail starting on page 68 in the B-17 Accusim manual.
