A book for B17 Fans

Am in the process of reading, for the second time, a book called " A Higher Call", which tells a true story about a B17 and a Luftwaffe fighter pilot. During a raid to Bremen in 1943, A B17F from the 379th bombardment group, was severely damaged by fighter aircraft and flak. Barely able to stay airborne and with severely wounded and dead crew onboard, it turned for home. Suddenly an FW190, appeared alongside them. The fighter pilot flew up, over and around the B17, but did not attempt to fire at them. He realised that the bomber crew were incapable of defending themselves, and that as they were flying towards the North coast , they would fly over the most heavily defended section, surrounded by flak batteries. He tried to signal to them, to fly to Switzerland, but of course hand signals and gestures didn't work. So he just flew alongside them until they passed over the coast and watched them turn West and try to make it back to England. They made it back, just. He never told the authorities, otherwise he would have been shot for treason. The 2 pilots did meet up eventually, about 40 years later. True chivalry of the air. An amazing story.
