Can I use FSUIPC4 to temper the braking action

Post by BigT-65 »

I use the trigger on my joystick, Saitek X52, to apply brakes. When flying the A2A B-17 it is very difficult to use the brakes without nosing the plan into the runway. It is such a tedious effort to keep this from happening that it takes the fun out of taxiing the the B-17. I just purchased FSUIPC4 and was wondering if I could use it to set my brakes button to be variable or to reduce the braking force?

I use differential braking on landing. Also, I retract the flaps as soon as I touch down and then
pull back on the stick to use the elevators for additional aerodynamic braking.

When I apply the brakes it is just a momentary pull of the 'trigger switch' on my X-45 stick
coupled with an application of left or right rudder. I continue using the momentary application
of brakes and rudder until my speed is down to 20 mph or so.

I don't use toe brakes on my rudder pedals so the application of the rudder excursions is just
to activate the differential braking.

You say you have the X-52 and not the X-52 Pro. However, I think the X-52 has the thumb slider on the throttle like my X-52 Pro. What I do is under Axis Assignments I set Direct to FSUIPC Calibration and then set the first box to LeftBrake and the second box to RightBrake. I've become very used to it now and it allows variable brake pressure as needed. I do not have rudder pedals so this works for me and my system. Differential braking is a little more difficult without pedals. So under axis assignments > Rudder on the right side I set things up a little wacky.

Here is a thread where I explained my setting on differential braking.

My X52 does have a slider on the throttle control. I will try setting it up as the brakes and see how that works.
Thank you.

So, using your link above I was able to get my rudder brakes working. The photos were what I needed. Now I need to get my slider to work as the brakes and I can't get it right. Do you have a picture of the settings for that? Thanks for your help with this. Between the steerable tail wheel and the rudder brakes it is so much easier to drive this aircraft on the ground. I still need to get those brakes under control though.

BigT, I'm glad you got part of it working. On the slider brakes there are a couple things to do. First off open FSUIPC4.ini and do a search for BrakeReleaseThreshold. It's in the General section at top. It is most likely set to =75. Change this to BrakeReleaseThreshold=0. When set to 75 the brakes go down part way then come bake up. Now after setting the brakes as in photo below go to Axis Calibration tab and tic reverse, I like to push for brakes.

On the settings for the brakes some of my planes are set to Send direct to FSUIPC Calibration and some are set to Send to FS as normal axis. You can play with this and see which works best.

Thank you for the photo and instructions. I am having trouble getting the Delta to 256 and the in and out to 16383. Also I have numbers in the 10 ranges for action section in the to and from boxes. How do I get this stuff to be like yours?

I have never actually messed with the Delta so I would have to look into that.

As for the number 16384 in photo, that is brake slider full left or no brakes when the axis is set to reverse. If you move the slider you will see these numbers change. This really is just a visual that you can verify you have the correct axis prior to making changes.

On the right side under Set up to 10 ranges... You should not have anything there unless you have assigned something. You will still be able to click the up and down arrows to see what is assigned under the 10 ranges but you probably should have nothing. There is a delete this and delete all at bottom right if you need them.

To verify, I have most all of my brakes assigned under Send Direct to FSUIPC Calibration.

Got it, I tested it out and taxiing is so much better. Variable brakes are working well too. I could not, however, find the reverse box for the slider so I am pulling for brakes instead of pushing. Where would that be precisely?

Inside fsuipc under the axis calibration tab there's an arrow to the right for page 2 and the brakes are on the right side of that page. There's a rev box to checkmark for reverse. Do both left and right brake.

Sweet! Note that you can play with the parameter while setting up the rudder actuated differential brakes. Remember that +16384 is NO brakes and -16384 is full brakes. So, parameter of 0 is 50% braking. I have each plane set to a different parameter due to it's braking and turning ability. The 51 works best for me when set to -1500. The P40 requires much more with -13500. I'm still playing with the Connie as it needs very little differential braking so I'm trying 8000 next as 5000 is too much. The B17 seems to work best for me at -8500. Enjoy your flights... 8)
