B-17 low passes

Post by Piper_EEWL »

Hi guys,

Found this video on YouTube today and thought I'd share it here:

https://youtu.be/TGGynxYbA48

Some crazy low passes with B-17. The footage is from the 1962 movie "The War Lover" starring Steve McQueen.

Enjoy

Hehe true. A real classic. I'm still amazed that that prop did not hit the ground

But then again the others aren't that shabby considering the B-17 being a little less agile are they

Hi.
The brits have a reputation for low flying , started in the war years , to evade anti aircraft guns for one thing.
I remember in the seventies , during the annual bombing competition , that year it was held in the usa , that the americans accused the brits of cheating , the story that appeared in the RAF news , told us , that the RAF where tasked with getting a simulated bomb run on a usa mil base , and the usaf had to prevent it , the story goes that on the day of the attack a usaf radar operator , saw a blip then nothing , then another blip , after a few of these random blips , he called his officer over , and pointed out the track of these blips , the officer called the fighter cover , and told them of these blips every few minutes , the fighters after a while reported a lone vulcan bomber at low level at full speed , they went to intercept the vulcan bomber , to chase him away , to the usaf fighter pilots surprise , two RAF buccaneers came from under the vulcans wings and chased the usaf fighters away , allowing the vulcan to complete his bomb run and the RAF won the comp , it was reported the blips where caused when the vulcan had to climb to miss sand ridges and his tail fin hit the radar beam , the buccaneers where reportedly flying between 10 and 20 feet above the desert , the vulcan not much higher.
