Pilot of Me109 E-4 of JG 53

Post by arrantmaverick »

Hi all,

Am loving A2A's Me 109.

Can anybody tell me the identity of the pilot of the E-4 variant of JG53? Also, can someone tell me what the single chevron and two horizontal bars on the fuselage sides indicate? I am geussing that they indicate a Gruppe kommandeur or Staffel Kapitan, or even Geschwader Kommodore, but i don't know which....!

Any information gratefully received...

Adam.

During the early stages of the Battle of Britain JG53 had the famous 'Ace of Spades' emblems removed from their aircraft and replaced by a red band around the cowling. It wasn't until the autumn of 1940 that the 'Ace of Spades' emblems were allowed to be used again.

This would make the 109-E4 in question the aircraft of Günther Freiherr von Maltzahn, who took command of JG53 on 30th September 1940. So it represents an E4 during the last few weeks of the Battle of Britain.

Have a look here to see a description of the different Geschwader markings.

I hope this helps.
