Paint Request : RAAF 3 Squadron WW2 P40/51 - Wing Cdr Brian Eaton

Post by TreeTops »

I have recently found out I am distantly related to RAAF Vice Air Marshal Brian Eaton who served in North Africa, Malta, Sicily, Italy and Yugoslavia 1943-1945 as sqn/leader of RAAF 3 sqn and commander of RAF 239 wing.
There are guys here how know so much about the different planes I thought I would post something.

He flew kittyhawks and mustangs. The markings on his planes were CV-V. I have seen some footage on youtube and some pictures. There seems to be different markings across the time period which would be understandable.
What I have seen so far is :
P-40 standard desert camo CV-V.
P-40 checkers on the upper elevators (maybe they were painted when he became sqn leader?)
no markings, just the letters B A E going down at 45 degrees towards the tailwheel. cant remember if it was the P-40 or p-51. (see below)
p-51 CV-V

I found a place that mentioned his plane was converted to duel seat, perhaps to pickup downed pilots and perhaps this was an old p-40 after they had converted to the new p-51s.

Tom Weiss has already painted the P-51 CV-P which was a sister ship.

I would be interested if anyone can shed further light on these planes and possible at some stage someone can do a livery for both planes.

Thanks for your interest.
Also, another thank you to A2A for enabling us to fly these wonderful aircraft which are part of our history. It helps us to understand their lives a little better.

Bump
Purchased the P-40 and P-51 for P3D over the weekend and wondered if any painter would like to do this paint for either or both of these planes.

Hello Trev.

Okay. So I bookmarked this topic last year for further research, found some information and put it aside for later. Then promptly forgot all about it.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and me, going through my old bookmarks it all came back to mind. After some further digging I came across this from a decal company.

So, using what I found I came up with this.

Try this out and see if it's any good.

Got it installed now and she looks mighty fine.
I've just dragged the B377 out of the hanger so I will have to squeeze in some time on this baby as well.
