Just saw this video posted on another forum and had to share. Sometimes I wish we still lived in Dayton as I really miss visiting the NMUSAF.

B-17 Memphis Belle Unveiling
Re: B-17 Memphis Belle Unveiling
Thanks Ed,
Glad the air force museum got the old girl before it went to the scrap yard. If anyone out there has not been to the air force museum in Dayton it is a must see. Bob Morgan was quite a character and his memoirs are a great read. I am sure any library of consequence has it available.

Ugh...I hate museum pieces. Let her fly.
Re: B-17 Memphis Belle Unveiling
Great to see another plane being preserved, it was a lot of work and it seems that they did quite a makeover there...
but she looks awful, like those plastic toys, squeaky-clean colors, no signs of the hard times she should tell us about. To see her like this doesn't touch me anymore and, to be honest, makes me upset.
Let's hope the restoration of the B-26 "Flak Bait" will leave more of the original patina untouched. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flak_Bait

Thanks! I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was bothering me. You got it right on the mark.R-2800-59 wrote:Great to see another plane being preserved, it was a lot of work and it seems that they did quite a makeover there...

I’m sure the internal discussions on this issue were feisty, to say the least.

From everything I’ve heard, Flak Bait will be displayed as is. So much of the original paint is intact that the curators opted to let her show all her scars and not paint over her. A good call.
