This is the place where we can all meet and speak about whatever is on the mind.

WW2 bomb closes London City airport

Post by Paul K »

This might be of interest. We're quite used to unexploded bombs being unearthed in German cities, but it doesn't happen quite so often in Britain. That said, no doubt there are many still lying around the country. They also say that very likely there are a lot of unexploded anti-aircraft shells lying in the Thames mud.

I have no idea how many bombs are unearthed elsewhere but I know we've had three in the harbour in just the last year. Wherever there are construction works it seems there are bombs...and more.

I read the proposal for dredging the Goodwin Sands and it was stopped primarily due to the airmen who rest there not to mention hundreds of years worth of sailors...and of course the bombs.

This was an interesting one from 2012 - a V2 rocket sitting nose down in the mud at Harwich.

According to the story, some people had been mooring their boats to it! After 68 years, the bomb disposal crews arrived.

I heard about this on the drive home from a family visit the other day, didnt surprise me too much given the amount of stuff lying about the place.

I think it was an SC500 they found this time, so one of the larger jobs the Luftwaffe gave us.

cheers,
Lewis
