Escape from Hurricane Irma (Embry Riddle)

Post by Orlaam »

Embry Riddle is evacuating all their planes to Alabama. Looks like they started the take offs at around 0330. Wonder how many planes they have? Crazy.

Having been through two cat 5 cyclones in the past 7 years, my thoughts go out for those within the impact area. It is truly a terrifying experience, buckle down and stay safe :|

Smart move. If I was an airplane owner in Florida I'd be flying out as well.

We moved to Florida in 2014 to escape the ice and snow in Ohio. We thought about evacuating for Irma but talked to some neighbors that have lived here all of their lives and chose to shelter in place. We have a conservation area behind our home that will break a lot of the wind from the East and are 6 1/2 miles inland from the Gulf at 31 feet.

We have been stocking water and canned goods since last week, we always have some during June-November hurricane season, but got more. The gas grill has 2 tanks full and both cars tanks are full. Today I boarded up the windows. Our daughter and her family live about 20 miles South of us, closer to Tampa, and their zone became a mandatory evacuation area today due to possible storm surge. We will have 5 added guests for the duration.

If Irma screws up my 30 month cockpit build I will NOT be a happy camper.

We are not complaining. The region here is beautiful most of the time and like everyone else, we have weather emergencies and now it's our turn.

Take care and stay safe
Ed

Yeah, thoughts are with you guys who live in Florida as Irma approaches. (I know there are quite a few residents of The Sunshine State who are members here.)

Best of luck and stay safe!

I wonder why people with powered boats didn't leave with them as I see many of them docked on the live streams.
Many of them have to be quite expensive and their loss would be quite a huge pain.

Hey Ed,

After following Irma's progress on the news, really hoping you and your family have come through safely with homes and belongings intact. Hard to imagine what last night must have been like for you all...

Best wishes,
Nick

Hello everyone

We had a lot of wind (80-95 MPH) and rain but we got through the storm with no damage and the power stayed on! Our daughter and her family live very close to Tampa Bay. Their area is very low and with the expected storm surge a mandatory evacuation was issued so our house went from 2 to 7 last night. I forgot how much 3 teenagers can eat! They left this morning and have called to say there was no storm damage and the power is still on.

There are millions in Florida that have no electric and severe storm damage. The humidity and temperatures this week will both be in the 90's and without A/C they will be miserable. We were VERY fortunate and our hearts go out to those that were effected by Irma.

Here are pics of the predicted storm path and its actual path. We were VERY fortunate!

Take care everyone
Ed

Thanks for the update Ed! :D Very happy to hear you all escaped unscathed, presumably with some memories of an 'exciting' night which will stay with you for a while.

Thoughts are with those across the region who were less fortunate.

Cheers,
Nick
