Washington, D C 2120-September 1, 1945
To: D A MacArthur/C H Nimitz
From: H S Truman
Political Correctness is a doctrine, recently fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and promoted by a sick mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of ?()^ by the clean end!
Now, with special thanks to the Truman Museum and Harry himself, you and I finally have a full understanding of what 'POLITICAL CORRECTNESS' means.

Harry was always ahead of his time !
Re: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
Another one of those internet 'facts', I'm afraid. That Nimitz's middle initial, shown as H, is incorrect gives it away somewhat. His middle name was William.

OK, so he didn't actually say it, it is still right on the money. The truth is the truth no matter who says it.Paul K wrote:Another one of those internet 'facts', I'm afraid. That Nimitz's middle initial, shown as H, is incorrect gives it away somewhat. His middle name was William.

Re: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
I suspect that the "Political Correctness" of the 1950s barely resembles the Political Correctness people complain of today. Honestly, in a pre Civil Rights, pre Women's Liberation, Communist-fearing, Jim Crow embracing predominantly Protestant society... what COULDN'T a straight white Christian male say? That he liked Toyota cars?

Re: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
I always thought that political correctness was just being aware of the feelings of people you are talking about.

I agree with this.bullfox wrote:I always thought that political correctness was just being aware of the feelings of people you are talking about.
A quick Google search revealed this definition: "po·lit·i·cal cor·rect·ness. [pəˈlidəkəl kəˈrek(t)nəs] - NOUN - the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against." Wikipedia says the term wasn't commonly used until the 1990s.

Now there are words to live by. If we all took into consideration other peoples feelings the world would be a much better place. Treat others as you would like to be treated and spoken to.bullfox wrote:I always thought that political correctness was just being aware of the feelings of people you are talking about.

Just remember, if you keep smiling for too long they will take you away, those nice young men in their clean white coats.
