Just a hint here on salvaging data from something that happened to me several days ago
One thing that I noticed is that CD's that I burned nearly 12 to 17 years ago were not recognized on newer optical drives it's strange. One says oh crap I have to throw out these
CD's but don't do that right away.
I noticed that when I made a copy of my software CD's on a newer optical drive they were not recognized on my antiquated 2000 year Sony CD Burner yet were recognized on a 1997 year Goldstar CD-ROM drive.
So when you think that your old CD's or DVD's that you burned have gone bad and you have lost valuable saved data just try them on several optical drives they just might be recognized on some of them in which case you could salvage the data say with a flash memory stick.

This is kind of speculative but I have had trouble with Sony DVD players on more than one occasion. They will not recognize a burned DVD that other brand players of the same vintage have no trouble with. The brand of the disc has also come into play. Certainly above my pay grade for an explanation. But as Alan said try another player or drive before you can the disc.

My first name is Jon or Jonathan BTW.
It has been a while since I have made posts here though as unfortunately I have been busy with other things.
You're probably right about different brands of optical media coming into play too.
