A Spitfire flips over and crashes in the North of France on takeoff. The pilot, a 44 year old male survives the crash without serious injury. The "Spit" didn't fair so well. I'm glad the pilot and viewing crowd are all ok.

Damn, that's how it goes when one doesn't heed your advice:cflord wrote:A Spitfire flips over and crashes in the North of France on takeoff. The pilot, a 44 year old male survives the crash without serious injury. The "Spit" didn't fair so well. I'm glad the pilot and viewing crowd are all ok.

Hope the Spit can be fixed

Wow! That is a shame, but glad to hear the pilot is okay.

Didn't that aircraft have a problem a year or two ago? I seem to remember a bad prop strike on landing or taxying.

Glad the pilot is ok. A spectator had an arm broken by debris.
It's the PRXIX based in Darois (Dijon). Restored by Christophe Jacquard some years ago with a Shackleton engine.
I hope she is not beyond repairs.
Below in 2015, nice bird.

If you notice when he applied power he did not have up elevator but hastily added it too late.

Not really the place to dissect real plane crashes, Warbirds.

Re: Historic Fighter Plane Crashes On Takeoff
If you want to read more on what may have happened, I would suggest reading the contents of this thread - http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... =3&t=65414
Dudley weighs in with some information that I think is useful even to us here as he talks about trim setting and how it actually affects the takeoff versus what we think it does.
I will add the information about the bystander who was unfortunately injured. We'd not heard anything in that circle on any bystanders, although it was a major concern with the amount of blade pieces and large chunks of earth that were sent at high velocity toward the crowd line.
BTW, it's important to not this happened at a local fly-in which the Spitfire and SeaFury (also from the same museum) visited for show. The departure was to go back to their base and the planes were heavily loaded with fuel for the trip. This was not going to be a display.

Re: Historic Fighter Plane Crashes On Takeoff
This was an open day at the local airfield with static display but no airshow. Hence no fire brigade.
Both A/C are part of a private collection based on Dijon/Darois airport. Dijon is 160 nm away from Longuyon and the Spit was not loaded with fuel.

Re: Historic Fighter Plane Crashes On Takeoff
According to one of the volunteers who was there on the day of the event, both the Spitfire and SeaFury were fully fueled prior to departure. In the US and Canada, this is a common form of "payment" for appearance (even static) of a high profile aircraft at a local event.

Re: Historic Fighter Plane Crashes On Takeoff
Correction : it was rebuilt at Chino by Steve Hinton in 2002 and operated by Planes of Fames with the Shackleton engine (Griffon 57) and contra-rotating props.guillaume78150 wrote:...Restored by Christophe Jacquard some years ago with a Shackleton engine.
Sold in 2005 to C. Jacquard in Dijon who retrofit the A/C in its original configuration with the single propeller Griffon 66.
Cédric Ruet, the pilot, is an Armée de l'Air fighter pilot, former Rafale solo presenter. He is obviously the best placed to explain what's happened.
