An interesting B-17 picture.

I found this on an aviation newsgroup today. It shows a B-17 flying on two engines, photographed from a Lancaster's cockpit. From what I can discover, the B-17 is from the 457th BG, serial number 43-39080 and christened 'Girl With Towel'. The Lancaster is from Waddington, but that's all I can find out. The obvious question is why was she on two engines ? A training exercise ? Or did the Lancaster find her struggling home from a raid and escorted her to provide moral support ?

Yes, I've seen that before. It's quite a Story. Seems it was a regular game..... who can shut down the most engines!!

They are from a collection of photographs from Waddington, unfortunately the post is nothing to do with me.

Apparently the Lanc won by shutting down a third!

Are you trying to attach a picture directly to the post? Pictures need to be hosted on another website and then linked to here.

What a great topic! My mind immediately went back to a pic I found somewhere of an Avro Lincoln beating up an aerodrome on one engine! As I understand it, the captain dived the aircraft down, and then they shut down three engines. I also believe the crew was imploring the skipper for an immediate restart!
