Regardless of that, he landed on a perceived runway with an aircraft on it. That is actually worse in my opinion.

If he landed like that on an FAA checkride, he would have failed.

I'm happy for him. I'm sure it would have been hard to loose a license over something like this. But I can't stop to wonder if he had some celebrity bonus with the FAA on this??

Maybe, but the FAA is also well known for being lenient on pilots who mea culpa. I've heard of the FAA forgiving some pretty scary near misses in the past simply because the pilot was the one who reported the mishap (and not through the NASA ASRS system, but directly to the FAA). It's one of the few things the FAA seems to get right consistently.

I agree. No harm no foul give him a 2nd chance.

The FAA has also been pushing this new "compliance culture" initiative where they seek to bring errant pilots back into the light rather than go straight to enforcement action. This avoid costly legal battles and hearings, etc. in cases where there wasn't blatant disregard for the regulations.

Making an example of Mr. Ford may have raised a lot of eyebrows and made pilots think twice about being cooperative.

Yes I think it's only fair if they give you a second chances in cases where no harm was done. In the end we're all human and can make mistakes. And no one takes away your drivers license for good just because you ran a red light once on accident.

I'm sure he has learned his lesson.
