I'm in a similar fix. Bought a quad core PC with a GTX 760, four years ago that could run what I wanted very well. These days, with Orbx LandClass, A2A planes, Active Sky 16 and a few nice airports, I am being ground down to the low 20s flying in the UK. I am also getting slow texture loadings now, where I didn't before.
I never considere upgrading the graphics card because I had read FSX puts most pressure on the processor, not the graphics card. BUT, I run with DX10 and I beleive that switches things around, so maybe it is worth investing in a GTX 970 too!
How easy is this? Can I crack open the PC case, unplug the 760, plug in the 970 reattach the connectors and then boot up? Is it that effortless?
Any help appreciated!
Graphics Card Advice
Re: Graphics Card Advice
Hey Mithras, sounds a little similar to me too now! I've had a GTX 780 TI a couple years now, and a few months back I replaced my TV/Monitor with a 50" 4k one.
I'm now finding I need to turn down some of sliders and settings quite a lot, especially with Complex aircraft at addon airports in Orbx land with ASN etc etc.
For example, at a UK2000 airport with the Connie and NGX, plus all the other addons I'm down to low 20's fps running in 4k.
Yes removing/replacing your GPU is quite simple, it was something I was quite intimidated about, but a couple of week ago I did a thorough clean of my PC case inside and removed my GPU for cleaning.
On mine there is a simple push clip to release it from the motherboard and then undo a couple of screws that attach it to the case chassis, and a couple of power cable clips.
It went back in and booted up no problems, Im no expert but I presume to replace the card with a new one would be just as easy......Maybe have to re download drivers with a new card too I'm guessing.
If I do upgrade it'll be to a 980ti or higher hopefully.
John.

Re: Graphics Card Advice
Thanks John, I did replace my GTX 760 once, a week after I got it when it went haywire. The company replaced it after a month and I was back to flying again. I've ordered a GTX 970 - let's hope I can pick things up again!

Re: Graphics Card Advice
Hey,
yes its that effortless hardware wise. Then once booted just uninstall all traces of the the drivers for the old card grab the latest nvidia drivers and install, restart the system and your good to go. Remember with a GPU change you will want to change your FSX graphics settings, and double check them as the GPU/driver change will probably reset several settings.
thanks,
Lewis
