Nikolai Medtner, indeed. My favourite composer of all. I've played lots of his works. A particular love for me is the Night Wind sonata op. 25 no. 2.
If I needed to stay forever on a deserted island I'd survive nicely with the score of that sonata.

I play a lot of contemporary music (in fact I'm on a tour these days with an ensemble, playing exclusively contemporary music). But the Stockhausen kind of crazy is not for me. I like my harmonies, humanly understandable rhythms, and the occasional melody. :-P

Incidentally, I have actually heard/witnessed the Helicopter-quarted live. I heard that whole opera, "Mittvoch", in Birmingham a number of years ago. Hilarous and interesting experience, but I probably don't want to hear it again as long as I live. :-P
Your work with the ensemble sounds very interesting. Its a good cause to get contemporary composers (living) more exposure on the concert scene. What a great thing to do.

 Ha.Yes, Stockhausen's kind of crazy is on another plane. I used to listen to a fair amount of Cage et al, but after a while couldn't really see the musical value. Interesting sound..or social ... experiments though.

I love music where the boundaries of harmony/rhythm/melody are explored and stretched - but not too far toward atonality, aleatory, or musique concrete.

I play piano, not professionally, and these days not so much. I do like N. Medtner's concertos, and the Reminiscenza sonata. I'll have to find and listen to op.25 no.2.

One of things I want to do is to tackle a Scriabin piece one day. Really like his Poeme Tragique.

Cheers

Just to bring the mood down a bit, the score from one of my favourite movies - the main theme from Fargo:

Another piece of classical piano music:

This is my favorite composer, Nicolai Medtner (from whom I've indeed gotten my nick).

Sonata Reminiscenza is a fantastically beautiful work. Try to imagine being told a story - close your eyes and go with the flow!

All the Accusim-planes are in my hangar, but they aren't sitting long enough for their engines to cool much before next flight!
