Just amazing. I've just been staring at this picture section by section looking at the tiny amazing details in this model, just look at that landing gear.Ian Warren wrote:Looking Smart !

Nice video, but wrong airplane. The L-1049G and L049 are only similar in name. Very little is actually the same between the two - especially the exhaust flames, which are not present on the L049.

I know. But I like the video so I thought I'd share it anyways. Next time I'll add that it's not the same plane.CAPFlyer wrote:Nice video, but wrong airplane. Thanks for setting this straight.

Great find, thanks or posting. I like the exhaust flames in the dusk sky, I believe they are, due to the high octane AVGas used nowadays.

There are a series of four diagrams in a period engineer's manual (for a different series of Constellation, not the 049 ) that describe the different type os flame you might see and whether it indicates a rich, lean or proper mixture and whether you're also burning oil!
Pretty cool, but I assume as Will says above, the character of the flame may be different today with the formulation of fuel used today. I can't really say. Regardless, Chris points out we shouldn't see it (except as backfire?) in the 049.

Re: New Captain of the Ship Aircraft - Connie L049
The reason I'm pointing it out is because Scott has gone to great length in the past and I want to continue doing so that these are two airplanes that only share a birthplace and otherwise are essentially different airplanes. The reason for this is that we don't want to create false expectations and get users asking "why no exhaust flames? I see them in these videos, so they must be right and you're wrong."
Also, the character of the flame on the Super Connies I don't think has changed much. The combustion temperature of 100LL versus 100/130 is the same. The difference is that 100/130 was more "knock resistant" than 100LL allowing for higher power settings. At most other settings, it operates nearly identically with very similar power output to the original fuels.
