With my system I get decent frame rates with the FSX sliders most of the way to max, however on long flights I have out of memory problems with the sliders set in high positions. I am running 32 bit XP. I have more memory installed than can be used by a 32 bit system.

I am considering getting a solid state hard drive with 64 bit Widows 7 installed and migrating over all the Flight Simulator files, leaving everything else on the current hard drive with 32 bit XP. The new hard drive would be dedicated only to Flight Simulator.

As near as I can estimate my FSX installation comes up to about 60 gigabytes. I am wondering if this seems like a good solution to the memory problem and what kind of issues I might have implementing this solution?

Hey Bullfox,

I dont follow you, do you mean you want to dual boot with two OS's?

Wouldnt it be easy to just upgrade your system to windows 7 64bit that mess around with dual boots etc? Remember you cannot migrate files in a copy/paste method. You should always install using the installers to make sure all files are written to the correct places and most importantly that all registry keys etc are written and correctly in place.

thanks,
Lewis

Good points Lewis. I was thinking of copying and pasting the FSX files. I was concerned that some non FSX files might not work at 64 bits plus I had heard that in going from XP to 7 you had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall. I have about 250 gigs total on the current hard drive. I was hoping to solve the memory problem without having to reinstall everything.

A reinstall is required for an OS upgrade. A copy/paste would just be a 'bodge' job and result in a nightmere with troubleshooting all manner of issues. Best bet is to backup your files to an external HDD or some such and install windows 7.

Lewis,
thanks again for your response. While reading up on this problem, I discovered that some guys still have out of memory problems even when running 64 bit Widows 7. I decided that before I went to the trouble and expense of upgrading and reinstalling, I would put my system on a memory diet. So far I have freed up about 20 megabytes by deleting a lot of scenery files and other miscellaneous files in FSX that I was not using anymore, but were still being loaded by FSX.exe.

I know this is a problem a lot of guys have. Its usually ascribed to memory leaks, but in my case, and probably in many cases, it is also partly just acquiring add ons over the years that you wind up not using but never bother to delete while not realizing that FSX.exe is still loading them into ram.

The idea here is to minimize the problem by cutting down on what gets loaded into ram, so that FSX has more memory to leak into, plus cutting down on the speed with which memory leaks out through judicious use of the various FSX sliders.
Thanks again,
Bullfox
