Was the Rolls-Royce Griffon developed from the Merlin V-12? Any other interesting stories about the Griffon, I'm sure as gearheads we'd all like to hear from whoever knows too much about this stuff! :wink:

From what I've been told, it's a yes an no answer. Yes the Fleet Air Arm asked RR if it was possible to make a bigger Merlin for their new aircraft the firefly. And no, the Griffon wasn't just a bigger version of a Merlin.

Correct, in addition to all others, there is one very basic difference..the prop turns anitclockwise as viewed by the pilot.

The Griffon is not a lot wider but is a heap longer, greater displacement, different Superchragers, etc etc etc
