Hey I was crappy at bombing but I finally obtained a 33% destruction of the target personally on the first B17 mission in Firepower, definately not the first try(I tried about 6 times before and missed).Maybe I need a better joystick(mine is about 5 years old).

Well, the entire bombing routine in CFS3 is pretty arcade. You have to be VERY quick. Like in any game.

The actual bomb site is deadly accurate imo.

This is what I do:

10 miles before drop: go to pilotstation.
Bring on tactical display. Select buildings (or whatever you want to hit). When the mission is designed properly you are on a straight line to the target. (I do not use any tags or whatever)
Open bombbay doors and select weapons.
Wait until you'll have about 3 or 4 miles to go. Switch to bombardier postion. The target should be visible by now.
You can only make minor adjustments. But there isn't much time.
Drop your bombs. Select weapons again and drop the next salvo...
You can hit moving ships this way.
But you don't have a second chance...

Now you'll have to be very quick!
Go back to pilot position. Close doors, and what I always do is to jump to gunner position and let AI pilot fly to the next waypoint. He does a better job than me. :)
Most of the time the target IS also a waypoint, and you'll have to hit that waypoint dead on to succeed to the next waypoint. So I don't have to go back and circle the target with all the flack around.
Note that I don't give orders to the rest of the flight. They bomb upon my bomb release.

That's it.
But you'll have to be quick. :)

Great advice Private_Ryan.It's kinda tricky on the bomb run.
Bombing in this simulation is pretty much like what it was in that older flight simulation called Fighter Squadron The Screamin' Demons over Europe by Activision. That simulation had a nice mission editor.

Heres a question Private Ryan - how do you get the time acceleration to work without warping. I have looked everywhere but to no avail. Please let me know how to use this feature (as I would prefer to use it too). Thanks

Ok, it is a somewhat hidden feature in CFS3.
A "cheat" so you like...

Right click your CFS3 desktop icon, and select properties.

In the target area of the second tab you will see this:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 3\cfs3.exe"

(if CFS3 is on the same drive)

add this to the line: -time

so it reads:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 3\cfs3.exe" -time

While in game Ctrl-Shift-e is time up (repeat up to 16 times)
Ctrl-shift-r is time down

That's right, sub pens in France were bombed a lot of time, to no avail !
Even after the war, they could not be destroyed  ; so yes, they are still standing today... The Marine National (french navy), used some of them (in Brest) and I know that one of the sub pens (Bordeaux I think) is now a night club (strange idea :!: ).

If you want to know more (in french, but a lot of photos - not my website) : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sous.marin/

~S~ Are you flying with just the Bombers AI? If you are then I not really a Bomber pilot. But if you are flying with Squadron mates I have on the 332nd FG web site a Bomber formation which I got from an actual Bomber Combat Report. It shows how the AAF Bomber Formations where set up. here you can see how an actual Bomber Formation really look like.
http:www.geocities.com/ah_rt_dulknife
Look in the Formations clivk on it go to the bottom of page and you see Bombers, click on that and you will see a Bomber Group actual Bomber formation including the Bomber Combat Box.

I Have the answer to this problem!
the reason that you can't get a 100% kill is because....

hey scott, is there a spot on your team for another mission builder?

the waypoints are set way too close!
if you set up a mission, think about being in the cockpit!
this way, you'll remember that to keep bombers in tight formation you "must" fly clean!
another words...don't toss the plane around in the sky...bombers turn slow!
if you try to turn too fast, or correct too much on your inbound approch...you will not keep the bombers in close formation!

also, i have recieved a 100% kill on that sub pen...this is how ya' do it...

get close enough to the target ...that you can "target" the sub pen.
then peel away...far enough so when you return to destroy it...you have your whole bomber flight in tight!
this way...when you drop..most..if not all of the bombs will land on target!
another thing that works well is in mission builder...change "spread factor"
from 1.00 down to say..0.80..now you'll have a tight formation to start with.
good luck..and drop those bombs on target!
:D

The sub pens had re-inforced concrete roofs that were 12 to 20 feet thick . It took more than a couple of direct hits with 500# GPs or armor piercing to even put a dimple in them.

They wasted their time going after them. The bombs never damaged the subs themselves since they couldn't penetrate all that concrete. It was a foolish effort on the allies part.

the allies knew that the sub pens were a tough target , but , they were trying to destroy the bases supplies not the pens! , yes...the sub pens were very thick concrete and ...impossible to knock out with the bomb loads they had. so instead...they took out their supplies...this is how they put the subs at bay...no torpedoes....no sinking allied ships! , and then...lets not forget the captured enigma machine. the german subs had to get supplies somewhere...and that's where the bombing of sub pens came into play! that's why the allies went after the sub pens! to starve them of supplies that kept them in operation and to bring the german subs out into the open sea where the allies had them cold!....remember why the u-571 got captured by the allies?....it needed supplies! :D

I never heard this before. But it makes sense. I feel better now that I know we were not operating off a flawed strategy. Interesting. Thanks. :)
