AI Issue?

Post by Dukera »

I have reinstalled today after an aborted move to W10. I am back on Win 7 64 bit.
Had my old install still on drive after re-install of system so have saved off the critical files for games, bdg etc.
Booted up good - single bomber intercept to landing ran good.
Tried "End of the Defiant" as Hurri pilot - Germans intercept and shoot down some Defiants and then commence to land on the water - I can see them floating on the top of the water......

I did base install.
2.12 patch
2.11 multiskin
restored old files for config, cockpits and saved games.

Did I miss an AI patch along the way?

Thanks in advance,
Dukera

Re: AI Issue?

Hi: The crash is in ntdll.dll, which is part of windows, so
it means windows is unhappy with some sort of configuration
between itself and the sim. We don't have any information
about the content of ntdll.dll, so it's hard to know what
bothers it (it is a frequent source of trouble), but in this
case, the module name is "multibyte to unicode" which
suggests it is complaining about something to do with
how your character text is being handled - it sounds like
it is having trouble with changing multibyte text, such as
chinese characters, to unicode text. (This should not be
an issue while running BoB2, but there it is...).

This is not terribly illuminating, but anything which generates
an ntdll.dll crash is being caused outside the BoB2 code,
so the things to look at are background processes which
might interfere, or system configurations which have changed
in your machine setup (nice machine, by the way). You can
review the recommendations in the v2.12 release notes for
running under W7, the "disable desktop composition" stuff,
and don't have any compatibility mode set. Also ensure your
system text is set at the standard 96dpi. I don't know if
you had to reload your Win7 from scratch again, but of
course you'd need the current version of DirectX 9.0c, which
I think is dated 2011 - you can check you're good there by
confirming the existence of the file d3dx9_43.dll in your
windows\system32\ folder.

Also check your BoB2 options settings to ensure you've got
particle density at medium or lower, though that's not likely
the issue here.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Edit: I have looked back through the forum history, and that
ntdll module is implicated when the .ocx files aren't properly
registered - this is a function executed by the patch installer -
you can't have a patch run properly over an original install by
simply copying the file content from a save folder. Sometime
around v2.07 or 8, a set of .ocx files was added by the installer
to a separate folder in \Program Files(x86)\Common Files\merlin\ ,
and the installer runs a script which registers them in the windows
registry associating them with the program. Subsequent patches
all rely on being told by the registry where these files are. The ocx
files are involved in the generation of the menu windows and
dialog boxes, thus the link to text handling.

Thanks for the reply.

I did "apply" the 2.12 patch and then the 2.11 skin patch and did not copy them into the install.

I turned particle to medium and may go to small.

Trying to fly the front bomber intercept - ok in formation but when the formation begins to split to dive to intercept and the graphics tend to get full aka flak and bogies, the sim studders, freezes and the English text pops up.

I'll re-read Buddye's notes for 2.12.

It appears I fixed it. I read another thread with the same issue and noticed when he indicated he's fixed it he had unchecked the "run as compatible with..." option. Mine was checked.
Flew two historic missions to completion without issue.

Thanks for the help.

I did mention "don't have any compatibility mode set" ...

Well, just happy you've got it working.
